No he is not working on a ship, but he is checking to make sure that the barrel is right on. When passed, the barrels move on to other checkings.
Scenes like this are the type of data that is on the CD. Those Videos are longer. Also there are the "Plates" which are the line drawings done by Ordnance that show changes in the M1 Garand's development. You may have to hit replay once.
