Okay, I know this may open a can of worms, but I honestly want to know...what are the relative advantages/disadvantages of 22 WMR vs. 17 HMR or vice versa?  Before you ask, I'll be shooting four-legged chicken thieves whatever they may be.

Lately, I've been looking at and reading opinions on this topic, ad nauseum.  I haven't figured out if there IS a definitive answer, except that each will work within its own limitations.  The secret is to figure out what those limitations are, and stay within them.  Most of what I've read is anecdotal:  Oh, the .17hmr will blow up on a coyote rib...Oh, the .17hmr will pass through a coyote...Oh, the .22 mag is too slow...Oh, you need more than the 17 grains of the 17hmr...and on and on.

I just went ahead and bought both ;D

You might also check out rimfirecentral.com .  That site and forums are ALL about, you guessed it, rimfires.

I have one of each (at least!!) myself, plus a .22 LR Sportster and a couple of
.17 Mach2's. I say get one of each. The .22 Mag and the .17 HMR are both up to your task, so get them both and decide which you like better, then you can try to answer the question for the next person that posts it....<><.... ;D

P.S. - the key to the .17 HMR is using the proper ammo (bullet) for the job. It is important in all calibers but especially so in this small high velocity caliber. I think those that downplay it's effectivness do so from either using the wrong bullet for the game they are after or what they want to accomplish or just relate stories they have heard and have no actual expierence themselves with the round....good luck and enjoy yourself, you have a lot of fun ahead of you..

Call me old fashion......my granddaddy shot stuff with 22 magnum rimfires. when that wasn't enough rifle, he went to the .222 and when that wasn't enough he used a 30-06.

That pretty much covered anything that had fur on it here in Pennsylvania.
