10/22 Barrel Stuck - Help Please!
« on: March 21, 2007, 03:56:30 PM »
I'm working on another 10/22 project.  I was going through my standard list of modifications.  When it was time to replace the barrel the original barrel would not come out of the receiver.  Nothing is rusted on it and yes I have removed the two screws and the v-block.

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks,

Chuck

Place the barrel and receiver in freezer for about 30min or more, until the entire mechanism is at zero degrees. Remove from freezer and place barrel in padded vice, apply hot air via hot hair dryer to receiver near barrel to heat and expand receiver. The 10/22 receiver is aluminum which is a better heat conductor than the steel barrel. The receiver should heat faster and expand with the heat while the barrel remains cold and does not expand as much. With gloved hands, pull on the receiver to loosen it and to slide it off the barrel. Applying a bit of penetrating oil before freezing may help. Repeat if necessary.

Agree with nrb, also give it a sharp rap with a plastic mallet. This will help loosen then bond.  GOOD LUCK.

Thanks guys.  Well the freezer method helped.  I put it in the vise afterward, but the barrel wouldn't budge.  Tapped on it with a rubber malet and nothing.  I finally wrapped a rag around the barrel and clamped on a large set of vise grips.  I finally got it to loosen with a good crank in a counter clockwise direction.  I can't figure out why it was being so uncooperative.  ???  I bought this 10/22 used at a pawn shop over a year ago and it's been in the safe ever since.  Here's the finished product.
