Remington 673 Guide rifle scout scope question
« on: March 22, 2007, 05:08:39 AM »
Hello

I was wondering if someone tried to mount a scout base on a remington 673. Would it work with the steel rib? most important where can I get such mount.
I'd love to use the open sights but I'm afraid my eyes re not all that great.javascript:void(0);
Huh
Thanks

Weaver makes Bases for the 673.  The 673 has a Model 7 action, so it shouldn't be very hard finding a base and ring set up for it.  I chose to use Weaver.

You might have a problem if you have a scope bigger than 40mm, as in 3x9x40.  I put a 3x9x32 on mine with no problems at all.

If you have a longer scope, you may have a problem with the scope touching the rear sight.  In that case, Weaver makes Off-set rings.

When I got the rings and bases for my 673, I bought one offset ring and one regular ring, even though I had the smaller scope.  I used the offset ring for the front mount, but I suppose you could buy two offset rings and use them both, should you have a scope that is a little longer.

Getting the scope set up on a 673 is a litle tricky.  You need the scope back far enough so it doesnt hit the rear sight, but you need the scope forward enough so you get the proper eye relief, without being crumpled up to shoot it.  Offset ring (or rings) help you do that.  As for the vent rib, you will be somewhat restricted as to the size of your front lens for mounting on a 673.   I am not a fan of mounting scopes high off the action to make them fit guns like the 673, which is why I picked the 3x9x32mm.

Thanks for the input. I picked up a bushnell Banner 1.5-4x32 hopefully it will work fine. I'll attempt to put it together tonight!
Thanks.

You might try a M600 Redfield IER scope mount which mounts at the front of the 600's receiver and the rear site on the rib.  This is the true scout scope mount,  putting the eyepiece lens ahead of the ejection port which sounds like what you wanted.  It would be a fluke if it fit 100 percent,  but you might be able to modify the mounting holes in the base.  Problem is finding them.  I have one and have 4 600/660 rifles.  Of course you will need a scout scope with at least 10 inches of eye relief.

As far as I know, the 600 and 660 were not Model 7 receivers, and of the people that I know who own them, you had the option of turning the rear sight 180 degrees to make scopes fit better if you needed just a little extra distance.  It looks funny, but it is effective.  Flipping the rear sight on a 673 is not an option because it is a dove-tail mount.

A Compact or an extra eye relief scope may well be the answer.   But if you want to stick to regular size scopes, off-set rings work great.

My 32mm scope ends up so close to the vent rib that I had to notch out the scope cover over the rib to get the cover on.

I actually wanted to mount a 2x7x32 on my 673, but when I found a vintage NIB Bushnell 3x9x32mm with a BDC, which was the scope alot of people used for the 600 and 660, I knew it was what I wanted for the 673.
