M77 MK-II Triggers.
« on: March 25, 2007, 03:18:58 AM »
So what are you guys thoughts on replacement triggers for the 77 MK-II? I have one that is kinda mushy and I would like to get it replaced.

Which are your favorites and why? I am not looking for a bench rest trigger. Just a nice hunting trigger 3-4 pounds that snaps like a glass rod. I have looked at the Timney, Dayton Traister and Spec-Tech. Not sure which on to get.

Thanks for the help.

Jay

I replaced the triggers in both of my M77's with Rifle Basix triggers. They are excellent and an easy drop in installation. No fitting required. They are easily adjustable from ounces to a couple pounds without removing the action from the stock.

I always try tuning them up first.  Haven't had to replace one yet.  A Dremel and some fine Cratex (polishing) wheels does wonders.

Thanks guys. I have tried to clean up the trigger but there isn't much to do about over travel.

I have only used Timneys so I cannot comment on any others, although I am sure there are other excellent units.  I really like them and I think they give an excellent pull.   They are easy to install and I like the ability to adjust if I want to.

Don't waste your time and money on the Dayton-Traister trigger.  I installed one in a MKII and wouldn't have wasted my money on it if I had known what it was beforehand.  I sold the rifle to my S-I-L and he replaced the D-T with a Timney, now that is a custom trigger.

Luckyducker,

What didn't you like about the Dayton Traister? Just curious.

Here is a picture of the rifle in question-

Along side it's little .22 Magnum budy.

www.centerfirecentral.com/77trigger.html should get you to the site that gives you verbage and a drawing to gain an understanding of how to tune a Model 77 Mk II. HOWEVER: working on sear engagement can be VERY risky.   i recommend the use of a trigger pull-weight gauge and reasonable acceptance of 'some' creep in a sporting rifles trigger.   it's all part of being safe.

i hope this helps.

you should be able to access the trigger page directly.   if not just go to centerfirecentral.com and tell them you 'agree' and then go to the gunsmithing section.

take care with this project,
