Henry 22 rifles, any opinions?
« on: March 25, 2007, 06:25:36 AM »
I was looking at a Henry H001 22 rifle.  Just for fun, I absolutely don't need it but love lever guns and the price seems ok.  I wanted to see if anyone has experience with one and how it functions and shoots.  I have an old Winchester 22 auto that's a tack driver, I would only be interested in the Henry if they're known to be good shooters.

The finish isn't the best, and the recievers are alluminum, but they shoot great, and function perfectly with shorts, longs, or long rifle ammo. Hard to beat in my opinion for the money.

My son bought one for my grandson last year. Heard some negatives about this gun when it came out. ( Probably from Winchester fans.) After shooting it for myself, I was impressed. It shot nice tight groups with several brands of ammo, the action was nice and smooth & it handled very well. For $200 you can't go wrong.

I just picked up a Henry H004 Goldenboy 22 Mag. Without a doubt it has the smoothest action of any lever gun I have handled. It is an
absolutely beautiful firearm! It shoots like a laser. Very accurate. The only thing that might be a negative to some people is that the stock drop of the Goldenboy might not work out for mounting a scope because some people might not get the proper cheek weld. To me this is a non issue because in my mind a scope would ruin the lines of this beautiful piece of machinery. Just pick a Goldenboy up and cycle the action. I'm sure that you will agree that it is poetry in motion! :)

SM bob
I did just that yesterday, the GB and the Model: H001TM, which is the blued 22 Mag with an octogon barrel.  I like the balance and smoothness.  The cost of the blued model is $479 here.

Your comment is the reason I hesitate, actually I had the same opinion, yesterday, but you did echo my thoughts.

This is to be a bobcat hunting rifle and I WANT a scope, I have a hard time with open sights.  I'm just a bit concerned about how high the scope will have to sit.

I have a Savage 93 on order but the Henry is tempting even at twice the price.

Hello,

Just picked up a youth lever model for the kids. I may have to get one for myself also. It is a fantastic rifle. Great finish and very smooth. It can be shot very quickly with good accuracy. We have put at least a thousand rounds through it already with no malfunctions, even with Russian ammo which my other rifles don't like. The ONLY negative IMO is it has no cross bolt safety like most newer levers. May or may not be an issue but if kids are using it its better to have the cross bolt.

I prefer the leverguns without the crossbolt, the only safe guns for kids are single shots.  IMHO

I have the standard H001 that I replaced the plastic barrel band and front sight with Henry metal parts. It cost about 20 dollars for the metal parts. I love the gun. It is my favorite plinker. I replace the factory rear sight with a better williams notch sight. It goes nicely with the white dot front. Check the Henry section over at www.rimfirecentral.com for lots of good info.

Was looking at a Oct barrel model yesterday, very nice but I want a cheek weld when shooting with a scope.

Bought a 001 and the trigger wasn't safe to use. They sent it back but I figured there might be something else wrong later so I got a refund.

Tried a Savage Mark II and it wouldn't feed, extract, and sometimes failed to fire. Savage couldn't fix it, so I got rid of it.

Now I have a CZ 452 American. A little expensive, but it is the best .22 I ever had.
