WOW now I know what I have been missing
« on: March 25, 2007, 06:43:52 PM »
Went out today with the family to go shooting took out my new Renegade .50 and our new to us Traditions Crocket .32. WOW I had fired a ML once or twice when I was a kid but I had forgoten what it was like holy cow I cant belive they let you have this much fun with out charging you every time you pick one up ;D ;D ;D ;D.

We didnt really try to shoot pretty groups just out to have fun My boys are 7 and 5 so any hit on paper for them is a blast they didnt want to shoot the Renegade but between the boys and me we put about 30 PRBs threw the .32. Out of the kids the one with the biggest smile was my youngest ;D.

I am really impressed with the Renegade you all weren't kidding. The first shoot was dead on @50yards :o now mind you this is a kit gun that we put together and this was the first time she has ever been fired so the sights weren't even dialed in I just got lucky with the settings when I put the rear sight together. The second and third shots cut a nice clover leaf about 1 1/2" across I think she can do better this was with a .490 ball and homemade pillow tick patches using straight lard for lube with 70grn of Pyrodex P.

Must say It was a great day and everyone had an awesome time ;D ;D ;D ;D These things are addicting

Sounds like a good time was had by all.   Nothing better than a day with the family shooting black powder.   8)

Small bore 32's are a blast, a pound of powder goes a long way at 20 grains per charge.   ;D

Hornady #1 buckshot shoots pretty well in the 32, measures .300 and is swaged.  I use .018 pillow ticking and 20 grains of FFF for the best accuracy, minute of squirrels head at 25 yards.   ;)

Five pounds cost about $10, roughly 750 balls per 5 pounds.   :)

Well slug....now that you've gotten your nose full of sulphur and shot some pretty darn good starting groups, you're done for.  The best thing is that you're kids have been properly indoctrinated to the correct way of shooting muzzleloaders.  Congrats on a great day of shooting.

Just kidding. You are going to enjoy the ML. Next thing you know you will be ordering a GM barrel, and shooting 300 to 400 yards.  Ron

Dont know about 300-400 yards at least not with out a tang sight ;D. I will have to get a .32 for my self and one for my wife we kept arguing about whos turn it was to shoot it. That way the kids dont have to share with us bigger kids ;). The .50 was a blast started at 70 grns and went up and down from there she really likes 70grn even tried a 100grn load talk about cool. I was debateing taking it out for pigs in May. After seeing what a .490 RB does to a wood post I wont be caught dead with out it I can already hear the bacon sizzeling. ;D

Thank you all for your help and advice.

I got the addiction about 1958. Getting a flinter dialed in and out-shooting folks with M16's (I was a military instructor) is sure fun. ;D ;D ;D I can't shoot as fast but I sure can put metal on target. Over the years I have instructed hundreds of young Soldiers in shooting the flint lock. I tell them all "when you master the flint lock, you will be ten times better with the M16".

Muzzleloaders are ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Won't be long and you'll be wearing a Walker for backup. Welcome to the fray.

Only if you have one in each hand and shoot them at the same time. Yes, you've been bitten.

I started in the 70s, and still remember the first time I shot one, I remember thinking, dang! this thing really works :)

I own two custom flinters, a .40 and a .54...Figure I can do what I need to do with either of them...
I still get a kick out of folks that say "Will that thing kill a deer?"...I tell them "Daniel Boone died in his sleep at 85, its all he ever knew".

What a great way to spend the day with your boys!
You are ready for those hogs, let me tell you. I have killed 6  wild hogs with the .50 prb from my TC Hawken. None of them made 50 yards.
It is hell on whitetail deer also.
Aim small don't miss.

Yep I will also try to take it out for mule deer this fall and I am sure there is a coyote out there with a need to have a .50cal hole punched in it. ;D
