Lyman .50 Deerstalker
« on: May 16, 2003, 08:04:08 AM »
Hello everyone.
Several months ago I'd asked you if Lyman made good quality ML's.
Well I got some good advise.
Back in January I bought the Deerstalker in .50 cal.  I'm quite impressed! I've been down to the local range and put around 50 rounds through it(not in one day, hehe) It has not miss-fired once while there.
The only think I do is between every two or three shots is swab the barrel with a couple of cleaning patches that have either T/C Bore Butter or Uncle Mike Bore Shine on it.
The only minor problem I see so far is the wedge comes lose after about 5 - 10 shots.  But I got an idea from this forum to fix that.  Bend it ever so slightly.

I just wanted to say thanks for the advise and to past this information on.

Sounds good skunkie, have you tried any round balls yet?
I was impressed at how accurate they were.I will use the round balls for deer and my 380gr REAL's for bear. You also should try some "Clean Shot" powder. I love it no mess or that nasty smell and clean-up is a snap. :)

I thought you couldn't shoot chear-shot out of this type of ML?
And I also thought the barrel twist is to fast for round ball?
I use 90g. of Elephant 2F and t/c 350 gr.  MaxiHunters
I getting 1-2 inch groups, which I don't think is to bad.

Skunkie, I have been using my Deerstalker for 11 years now and still love it. I have shot everything from sabots to balls, and had good accuracy with most. I put a Magnum Spitfire nipple on, and have had no problem using Pyrodex or 777. In wet or very cold weather I use Goex ffg or 5 grains under the main charge of Pyrodex to help set it off. I do most of my deer hunting with the round ball, and find it works very good. The only problem I came across, was with Bore Butter. It built up in the bore and destroyed accuracy. It took 2 days, 2 brass brushes, a bag of patches, a bunch of WD40, and a lot of not nice words to get the crud out. It now shoots as good as ever. Good luck with a fine rifle.

Snowshoe,
I use LYMAN BUTCH'S BORE SHINE .  It works great.  The only thing I use T/C bore butter for is to put it on my toast - only kidding.
I use it after I've cleaned it with the bore shine to prevent any rust.

thanks,
