250 grain loads ?
« on: March 27, 2007, 03:26:47 PM »
Not sure if this belongs here or not, BUT  :)

I have a 45-70 Handi on order. For deer I prefer light bullets. I will handload and am looking to shoot Hornady SST 250 grain bonded bullets as fast as is reasonable from this rifle.

Any fast loads out there?

Thanks,  edge.

When did Hornady start making a 250 for the .45-70?

When I had my Handi in [one of the barrels] 45/70,,,I bought SPEER 250 SWC Swaged pistol bullets and paper patched them out to about .460" diameter. Worked great. Took a nice 8 pt buck with bullet entering the rear of the abdomen/rib cage,,traveling thru the diaphram,,lungs, exiting the chest,,entering the front left leg where I found it under the hide next to the leg bone. Guess you could call that penetration. Bullet is shown as I found it. No particles,,just a gum blob of lead that held together like soft lead should. Fun to make and load. Also took a 325 gr[?] bullet meant for hot Colt loads I think. Had a friend that owned the mold to cast some dead soft bullets for paper patching it, too. Worked great in my 45/70, and .458 American [.458 x 2"] I built on a Ruger 77 Mark II rifle using a take off Ruger #3 single shot barrel. Worked like a charm. Also shown is Hornady pistol swage lead bullet I patched and ran back thru a .359"-.360" die. Worked fine in a .358 Win in a bolt Ruger.

If you want a lighter bullet, get some collar buttons! ;)

Barnes makes a 250gr TSX now too.

Sorry, the SST is 0.452

I upsize them to 0.457/8 in a hydraulic press.

Looking for 2500/2600 fps.

Have you used them at that velocity? Since it's a ML bullet, I'd think it would have explosive terminal performance on anything relatively close at that velocity. Maybe for looong range it might work. Give Hornady a call or email, they'll let you know what the working velocity range is.

One member here pushed the Hornady HP 300gr close to 2700fps with a good dose of IMR4198 in the BC, although that's way beyond it's working range.  I've pushed the Nosler partition to over 2400fps in a 22" Handi with H4198, the NP has a working velocity range of 800fps to 2300fps, so it makes for a good choice to be pushed hard. ;)

Good luck with that. ;)

Maybe a 30-06 would be a better selection?

SNIP

I have shot many deer with them at that velocity, and close range shots need to bee in the boiler room and not at big bones. Yes, they create massive entrance wounds but they also give good penetration if large bones are missed. The deer that I have shot with this bullet were all shot from a Savage ML, and 2600 fps was the normal velocity for my loads.

Not looking for 300 grain loads, or the recoil of a 300 grainer @ 2700 fps either  ;)
