T/C .50 Cal New Englander rifling twist rate?
« on: March 28, 2007, 07:53:36 AM »
What is the rate of twist for this rifle? I know every rifle shoots bullets differently but does anybody have any recommendations for conical bullets for this rifle?  I am planning to try and get a deer with it next season.  Also, if it matters, I use Pyrodex RS.  I have some 370 grain Maxi Balls and I believe 250 grain Maxi Hunters (I am not sure on the weight, I will check) but want to try something else other than those and the PRB.

1:48 is the stated twist rate.  I have had very good luck with roundballs, and sabots.  My measured load is 80 grains Pyrodex select while using ea.

jp, what sabots do you use?  I was under the impression the rate of twist was not conducive to sabots.

I have had good luck using T/C 3 piece sabots and pure lead bullets in a 1 in 48" twist barrel. I have also had good luck using 240g Buffalo Bal-ets, but have used nothing but round balls in my 50 cal for the past several years. The round ball is does a very good job on whitetails out to 100 yards.

The 1:48 twist in the T/C New Englander barrel will shoot a PRB quite well. I have found that they also shoot T/C Maxi Hunter conical bullets with fine hunting accuracy.
