Limits on stubbing a handi barrel?
« on: March 28, 2007, 09:56:07 AM »
What are the limiting factors on stubbing a handi barrel?  What cartridge size? Pressures?

I know there are few guys if any with a lot of experience, so I am looking for some fact based opinion, if there is such a thing around here.

Since the underlug is the weak link in a Handi, and a stub uses a factory underlug, you'd still be limited to the typical factory available  cartridges or equivilent as far as pressures.

Tim,
Do you think it is a workable idea for a 260 Rem or 338 Federal?  Like most people i have seen only pistol cartridges done or low pressure rifle cartridges.

I know I could go the re-bore route  but not ready to do that......

I would think either of those would work fine pressure wise, although I don't know anyone that's done them, but I'm sure Larry will offer his opinion on it since he did the work on one.  ;)

You might ask Dave on the 338 federal I think he was offering it in a stub barrel before he moved. He might still do it for you. Ill send you the link in a pm.

I think the wall thickness in the chamber area of the stub would be the limiting thing.  I used a 13/16 stub size and threaded it 20 tpi to get the minimum thread depth, courser threads have more depth so take away from the thickness of the stub.  You may be able to go to 7/8 or even 15/16 but then the stub wall starts getting thin where the lug attaches.  I would really stay away from stainless barrels for a stubbing project.  I have never done, or know how to do, the calculations for the required chamber wall thickness for a given pressure, perhaps someone here knows the minimum that is safe.  I felt confident with the 30 carbine because it is a low pressure round and straight wall case.  Larry

I have never considered any chambering larger diameter that a standard 308/243 (.473 case head, .470-472 case web) including the 9.3x74R and a 405 win.

OK, so .470 diameter chamber, 13/16 diameter stub (.806 inches), .065 for the double thread depth of 20 TPI, do the math and it leaves .135 inches on each side of the chamber wall.  Care to lay you head on that one with 60,000 PSI inside?  Larry

So you don't consider the stub as offering any support?  Offhand do you know what a typical bolt action barrel shank measures for a 700 or Savage?

Standard small shank Savage is 1.055  at 20 tpi. Winchester and Ruger are 1.00 at 16 tpi Large ring Mauser is 1.1 at 12 tpi.  Small ring is .986 at 12 tpi.  I don't know right off hand what the Remiginton's use.

Interesting guys, my only project with stubbing is ongoing and it is a relatively low pressure .45 ACP so that will not be of much help to you. However as cowboyup453 said Dave has done quite a few and I am sure would offer his experience if asked. You can ask him at http://www.dandtcustomgunworks.com/

Good Luck....<><.... :)
