Recommendations for .38 target ammunition manufacturers?
« on: March 28, 2007, 06:30:49 PM »
Not sure if I should ask this here but the ammo section seems to deal with handloading and I am not at that stage yet.

The Distinguished Revolver program requires the use of .38 Special cartridges using a 158 grain round nose or semi-wadcutter bullet; I'm wondering if any particular manufacturer has earned a reputation as a maker of good quality ammo in that caliber? A rather brief search shows prety significant differences in price - I imagine the old "you get what you pay for" adage applies but are there possibly some lower cost makers of good quality products?

Thank you.

My copy of the rules, say round nose only.

car hauler:

Has there been a change in these rules recently?

I have the NRA rulebook that says "effective 2005" and that does indicate either round nose or SWC are acceptable (rule 3.1.4)

I'm just getting started at this so quite possibly missed a change.

Thank you.

Ned,
Just saw your post. I just went and looked at the date of my rulebook 2004. So your 2005 would be the one to go with. Unless there is another one out. In 2 weeks if I  am in town I will be working the Dixie match, and I will check, and report back my findings. For now though I apologize for the wrong info.

Ned,
I checked the rules at the match this weekend, as well as talked to the NRA referee. As you stated 158, roundnose, or swc. Also commercial manufactured reloads are legal also.

John:

Thank you for taking the time to check.

Was there a DR segment at the match you attended? Is the Smith & Wesson pretty much the gun of choice for that event?

Thank you again.

Ned,
Yes I believe a 278 won it. As I was a line officer, I walked the line, and looked at all revolvers. There were very few K-38's, which suprised me. Most of the guns were full lug, with a lot of pythons.
