first gb mortar complete!
« on: March 29, 2007, 01:36:23 PM »

Here are some pictures of my first gb mortar.  Thanks to Cannon Mike for a sweet tube, 1770 english coehorn, and thanks to the folks at seacoast artillary for the base idea.  The base is curly maple and all joints are secured with brass pins.

WOW!!  Very nice job!  With woodworking skills like those displayed here, we have no doubt about your ability to tackle ANY carriage making project.

What would you suggest for loads to start with and approximate distances ball will travel.  I have fg ffg and fffg powder.  I am almost finished with a field carriage with a 30" 24 pounder from canadian cannon co. and I have the same question for it as well.  Thanks Derek

Assuming it's steel, seeing a powder chamber, and assuming golf balls for projectiles; I'd start with 20-30 grains of ffg.  That should bracket on both sides of 100 meters fired at about 45degrees elevation.  (Assuming bore diameter of 1.70, shorter with a bore of 1.75".)

That's a guess, size of fuse hole will also affect range.

Cannon Mikes  1770 english coehorn is sure a good looking tube.
The carriage however is the kind of stuff Les Pauls are made of...........,smooth ;D

OK. Now that we've seen the pretty wood, I'm waiting for the "paint it OD or gray" post. :)
Very nice work (very nice wood too) MIKE

British artillery materiel tended to be dark gray but we have had a picture of a British Coehorn on the forum that was PINK.

But it's your piece; do anything you like with it.
