It's not a power tool story, but close enough.  A few years ago I was working on my son's BMX bike, getting it ready for a big race.  The rear freewheel (rear sprocket that free spins) has open bearings.  You need to get all the old oil and dust build up out so it spins with as little friction as possible.  I got a great idea to use some Gun Scrubber on it.  Well, it was late at night and I just wasn't thinking.  I grabbed the Gun Scrubber and gave it a good shot.  It hit that freewheel and sprayed right back into my eyes.

They burned so bad.  As I was feeling my way down the hallway to get to the bathroom, I was thinking that I had just blinded myself, knowing what that stuff does to your skin when you get it on you.  I flushed and flushed my eyes with water.  I could see, but both eyes were bloodshot for several days.

I was NOT wearing safety glasses, but I was wearing contacts at the time.  Maybe they helped I don't know.

So, WEAR YOUR SAFETY GLASSES!!!!

Working with people who don't know how to use their power tools rates right up there with hunting with those that don't know how to handle their fire arms.  KN

First accident I had,1972, wasn't with a power tool, but a screwdriver. Had a 1971 Harley-Davidson 350cc motorcycle. (Made in Italy) Trying to get the gas tank off. The tank was held on the by a spring that went under the frame one side and hooked on the other. I was using a screwdriver to try and pry the spring off the hook, it slipped and I stabbed myself just under my glass's. I believe my prescription glass's deflected the tip, as there was a pretty good scratch across the lens.
Second one was with a 3/4hp bench grinder. I didn't have the stops adjusted close enough to the wheel. Cleaning up a piece of steel for a target, DIDN'T put on a pair of gloves, and the wheel pulled the steel in, along with my index finger, right hand.(trigger finger) Pulled my hand out pretty quick, minus 90% of my finger nail and a bit of meat on the end of the finger. Found out that human flesh is not the same Brinell hardness as mild steel!! That was about 10 years ago. Finger and nail are pretty much back to normal. (still can't hit a damn thing when I shoot)But the one thing I didn't do was go to a doctor or emergency room, as a couple days later, developed a huge boil on the web between the thumb and finger. Went to my family doc, and she prescribed anti-biotics, politely chewed me out for not seaking treatment right away. Not sure where the line is when to see a doc or not, hopefully I won't ever have to again.  gypsyman
