primer extrusion
« on: March 30, 2007, 06:38:27 AM »
I'm getting some minor extrusion of the primers in my 223 Encore.Specifically CCI  small rifle, the load is 26.5 gr BL-C2 in neck sized Remington case under both 50 and 60 grain Hornadys. Both loads are well under max for that powder. The primers still have plenty of radius, no flattening, and I'm wondering if this is due to the rebounding hammer of the Encore not completely supporting the firing pin during ignition.I'm thinking that a magnum primer , with its harder cup , might work.Anyone out there have this problem? How'd you solve it? Thanks for the help.

Does the load shoot well?  Any extraction problems?  Don't worry about a cosmetic issue like this, it is most likely due to a slightly too-large firing pin hole in the breech face.

Accuracy is excellent.Consistently under 3/4 inch for 3 shots at 100.Extraction is fine. The little bit of extrusion does give alittle resistance to opening the breech though.

Switching to magnum primers did the trick AND accuracy improved a bit too.3 rounderat 100 are now closer to 5/8 inch and 5 rounders are shooting 3/4's.
