Can I shoot .480 Shells out of my 454 Casull Chamber?
« on: December 09, 2002, 10:15:05 AM »
If this is true...

The .480 Ruger is based on a .475 Linebaugh case shortened to a length of 1.285 inches. (The .475 Linebaugh is based on a modified .45-70 case shortened to 1.5 inches in length.) Hornady also developed a new 325 grain XTP-MAG bullet for the cartridge that allows an overall cartridge length of 1.65 inches. The maximum overall length of the .454 Casull cartridge is 1.68 inches, so any revolver cylinder long enough to accommodate the .454 is long enough for the .480 Ruger.

Can I shoot .480 Rugers inside of my 454 Casull Chamber????

thanks,
sethroe.

Why in God's name would you want to?

There's no way in hell I'd chamber my gun that way.  I love my hands and my eyes too much to risk loading the wrong caliber.

Even though the .480 does not have the energy of the .454, I'm sure there is something different enough about the cartridge to make this risky at the very least.

Why wouldn't you just buy the .454 loads?  Or load them yourself, down a bit?  The .454 kicks hard, sure, but it's livable.

I dont beleive you can chamber a 480 in a 454 cylinder. 454 shoots a .451 caliber round and a .480 shoots a 475 round.  A 22 LR might fit too, but stick with the recomended loads for that 454, read the owners manual thoroughly if you have any doubts.

No and be VERY VERY thankful you can't.

It will not physically chamber. Why you ask? Because the .480 Ruger uses a bullet that is .475" in diameter. The .454 Casull uses a bullet that is only .452" in diamether. Luckily the cases are also that much different and no chamber is gonna be loose enough to allow the larger to chamber.

If it did the gun quite litterally would become a hand grenade in your hands and the consequences could be loss of eye sight, fingers, hands or even death.

Just stick to using ammo that a gun is chambered for and NOTHING else.

Wijbrandus,

Thanks,

I know you can shoot .45 Colt out of the .454 Casull, so after reading that information on http://www.chuckhawks.com/480ruger.htm
I wasn't sure if I was reading correctly. The way it was written, kinda made you think it might be possible. but, good point, "why would you want to risk it"...Just load them down a bit.

Graybeard,

After reading http://www.chuckhawks.com/480ruger.htm

and he states...

That is where I began to ponder, but thanks for setting me straight.

I'm trying to figure out which Caliber to hunt Feral Hog With.

thanks,
sethroe

Thanks Geno, I will just stick to the loads that the manual suggests.

As it was stated before, don't try it. It's a one-time proposition.

What he was saying here is that a revolver with a cylinder long enough to be "produced" in 454 could also be produced in 480 Ruger (if the cylinder is of large enough diameter).

The long and short of it is that you can shoot 45 Long Colts in a 454Casull
and you can shoot 480 Rugers in a 475 Linebaugh. Just as you can shoot 38Specs in a 357mag gun, and 38Specs and 357mags in a 357 Max gun.

Just don't mix the diameters, they wouldn't fit anyway.

If you are not sure, when it comes to guns, it is always wiser to ask before you try. I think he was confused about how the article, he read, had stated it.
