heavy barrel too heavy?
« on: May 17, 2003, 02:43:31 AM »
Is a T/C Encore "heavy barrel" too heavy for big game hunting?  Is it more of a target barrel?  (7mm mag  26")  Thanks, Jim

I have the .223 and 300 winmag, heavy barrels and the added weight of a heavy barrel has made the entire rig more balanced. It is definately the best feeling gun i own.

I think it depends on what you add to the gun.  I don't have a 26" barrel so this may seem one sided . . . but, here's what my set up is and I find it about as heavy as I want to go.

T/C Encore SS Frame
T/C Encore SS 24" .223 barrel
Warne Maxima One-Piece Base
Warne Maxima Medium Rings
Boyd's Laminated Butstock and Forend
Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16X40mm

Add this all up and you've got a stout little rifle.  Like I said, about as much as I care to carry around.  What I'm getting at is try and look at what you're going to add to the total package to figure out if it ALL will be too heavey or not.  Now, if I were to be hiking the hills out west I might opt for a fixed scope, aluminum base & rings, and synthetic stocks to bring the weight down, or heck go with the Encore handgun - that would solve the problem.

Of course, I just thought of something.  The 7mm Mag barrel only comes in 26" factory configuration so you may be stuck unless you go with a custom tube.  My opinion for what it's worth.

I have 2 T/C Custom Shop Heavy barrels but they are only 16 1/4" and 20". I like the short but heavy concept. I don't think that the 26" would be too heavy to carry. The Encore carries real nice in the hand and if you sling it it shouldn't extend past the top of your head anyway. Sean
