Savage 99 cart.counter
« on: March 31, 2007, 02:55:38 AM »
I have a M-99 here in 308 Win that I'm cleaning up for a friend.
The receiver on this one is marked 99 and the barrel is marked 99F.

Problem I'm having is part of the cartridge counter is really tarnished, compared to the rest of it.
Is there something that a person can use to clean this up so it looks shine like the rest of it?
The book I have doesn't tell exactly how to remove the counter/cartridge follower!

The information I have recommends not removing the cartridge carrier assembly, as it was fit at the factory, I guess much in the way a revolver cylinder is timed. They suggest taking to a gunsmith.

I removed mine and cleaned it with gunbrite. Shines like new now!
There is a spring that needs to be wound when reassembling, much like a 10/22 magazine, not difficult at all

I think I'll take your advise and not disassemble.  I'd sure hate to screw things up.

This "gunbrite" stuff, is it something that you can apply with a q-tip and wipe off without making a mess?

The older deluxe models of Savage Model 99's all had a counter built into them.

I would not worry about polishing it up because it is only brass and will tarnish again after you polish it anyways.

You could try a couple of drops of Kaboom.  It will not polish it to a luster, but it will take the tarnish off the plate so that you can read the numbers again.

Gunbrite will slow the tarnishing after it has been applied as well.
It is no big deal removing and reinstalling the rotor, I think I have a page on how to do it somewhere, you can also check 24hourcampfire... there are some hardcore savage99 guys there

If it's as bad as all that, a good breakdown and cleaning might be in order anyhow.  Winding the rotor is a matter of at worst doing it several times to get it right.  I love old 99's and have owned a few that came to me with dead bugs, pine needles and all sorts of crud caught-up in the receiver.
If life is a beach, why am I so crabby?
