1/5 Scale completed
« on: March 31, 2007, 10:59:11 AM »
This is a project that I built in anticipation of a 1/2 scale cannon, just to see how things would go.  Enclosed are some picures of the finnishes product.
All the parts were fabricated, except the chain and the elevating screw.  Square threads that small are quite a challenge.
Everything except the vent hole and the 6 deg. dish in the wheels are 1/5 scale.  Taken from plans of the "3.67" Delafield Rifled Cannon with #1 Field Gun Carraige."
When I start the 1/2 scale, I'll try to take construction photos.

Very nicely done and beautifully detailed. What is the source of the plans you referenced?

Outstanding, beautiful work, great job.  When you get the carriage painted it is going to be absolutely fabulous.

The workmanship is great.

Don't let DD kid you, he thinks their unfinished.  ;)  I think they look great as you or I build them, for they make great show pieces.  We don't paint our furniture a Drab Olive Green do we.  ???

keep up the good work.  Rick

But we don't use our furniture to launch round shot, either.   ;D

We don't leave our John Deere Tractor clearcoat bare metal or paint it red do we.  A tremendous amount of attention to detail in the building of this gun and a major detail of these guns is the color.   The paint also serves to protect the wood from weather, dings and burns from use.  And they just plain look unfinished when not painted.

There are things that should be bare wood and there are things that should be painted.  Cannon carriges should be painted with one or two exceptions.

Building a cannon to scale takes a lot of time and attention to detail. You did a fine job indeed.

I think that I am not far off from saying that 90% of the people that look at our projects give them maybe a minute then wander off saying "Gee Nice".  The rest are the ones that have actually done something with their hands and understand the time and effort that we have spent.  So what I'm saying is do your work to please yourself.  We are the ones that we must satisfy.  That being said, your comments have been very much appreciated.
As to DD and GG, I think there is a silent majority out here that tends to like a natural finish.  My project is only a mantel rider and will never see a drop of rain.  Personally, I think anything other than a clear coating over oak is bordering on sin.
Thanks to JC Hannum for his inquiry on the source of my plans.  I remembered Dixie Gun Works.  I think the last place that has MC Switliks,"The More Complete Cannoneer".  I ordered mine today.

Ron,

You make a very valid point...   "So what I'm saying is do your work to please yourself."

You  have done that and you have a piece of work of which you can be proud.  I know that all of us here admire it, even those who paint.

Cat, They actually do make G.I. Joe scale figures, like these serving a 6-pounder.

Yea.  Histerically accurate.  I'm impressed.  Cannoneer Barbie just wouldn't be right.
