Lock-up problem
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:45:23 PM »
Have owned several handi-rifles, recently purchased one in 500 S&W. Apart from disappointment in that there is no longer an ejector, just an extractor, was happy with it.

Today was first really nice day to go shoot. After 15 or so rounds fired among various shooters, the action opened upon firing from the bench. I thought that it had not latched properly before firing, and the round impacted the target at point of aim. No stress marks to the case or primer, etc. Seemed like it opened instantly upon firing, but the pressure had to have dropped first.  Fired up the video camera, made absolutely sure the action was locked tight and fired again, and again it opened, this time on film. Again, the bullet hit the target, and the case looked normal.  Needless to say, we quit shooting.

The rounds fired were standard Hornady handgun rounds. Anyone else have anything like this happen? I can't unlock the action without pushing the button, but the release button has always had a lot of slack in it, and it rattles a little. My other ones weren't like that. Getting ready to send it back.

Did ya read the owner's manual? You need to close the action firmly, specially when new, don't be gentle, you're not gonna break it.  :D Read the FAQs and Help sticky, lots of info in there including "Pop Open Medicine" which is the following previous thread...

I read the manual, especially since I didn't know about the ejector change.
Rifle was locked up solid before the second shot opened it. We made a point of slamming it good before hand. You can even see it on the video, I tried to pop it open before I shot again. Never had a problem like that before in any of my other rifles, and including when new and with Bbuffalo Bore heavy 45/70 loads.  Will check everything out that was suggested. Thanks for the FAQ thing, didn't see it there.

It's there, I just got the link from there!! ;) Follow all those suggestions, if it still pops open, call H&R and make arrangements to have it repaired. You aren't the first to have the problem, it's probably the most common newbie complaint, easily fixed. :D

racerguy00, per your lock-up problem, i have a 500 i have shot 100's of times with factory and hand loads, it has never broke open, like quick said new rifles have to be closed hard, slam it closed its not going to break it, if it keeps doing this call nef and ship it back they good about fixing and repairing rifles, while there you can order you another barrel, good luck

This seems to be a fairly common problem.  My .30-06 developed it after several hundred rounds had been run through it.  I called up H&R and they had me ship it to them, when it came back it worked perfectly again.   ;D

Nothing I did fixed the problem, so back to H&R it went. They haven't said what was wrong, only that there was an issue covered under warranty and that it will be returned shortly. Looking forward to it.
