I Need a Measurement !
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:14:00 PM »
Can anyone get me a measure of depth for a dove-tail on the barrel of a rifle.  I want to install dove-tail Marlin sights on a 12ga Pardner and I need to know how much barrel will be removed in the notch, to see if it will leave enough thickness in the barrel.  Thanks

Cookie,

That would depend on the thickness of the base of the sight you want to use.

Hmmm!  I guess I thought that a 3/8" dove tail is standard.  Is that what you mean or are you talking about the top to bottom thickness of the part that slides into the dove tail base?  I thought that measure was kind of standard too.

The base of the sight that fits in the dovetail can be thick or thin, it will measure ~.375" front to back at the bottom of the dovetail tho. If you read the link I posted below, it will explain it. I've cut several dovetails by hand using that method, it works well on an octagon barrel, would be a little trickier on a round barrel.

Thanks Tim.  I am still exploring options and I really would like to do some of the work myself, as I am cheaper to pay than a gunsmith. ;)  Provided, of course, that I don't screw it up and have to replace the barrel ;D
