Pro Hunter 25-06?

Planning to buy a rifle for my wife, we've take a look!
She fall in love with the Thompson Pro Hunter Camo Stainless.
I choose the caliber, it's gonna be a 25-06.
I've heard a lot , that accuracy wasnt really there with the Encore, people are talking of 1.25 MOA.....nothing better !
Most of the time, we shoot are the club, and she use my 22-250, and sometimes ask for a rush of my Sako 300 wsm !!
She always grouping real great, about 0.5 average, with good reload and a 6-24x50mm it help.
We hunt big game, thats why i choose the 25 caliber.
But accuracy is at the top of the line for us.
I was looking also the Tikka T3 25-06
and the Browning Varmint Stalker in 25wssm.
If you can help us, give a shout !

If you are are shooting factory ammo, an Encore might not do better than 1.5 inches at 100 yards but if you reload, it should do a bit better.  For instance, I get less than 1 inch with an Encore chambered in 30/06 with the tapered barrel.  My 7mm Remington Magnum barrel does about 3/4 inches.  I would say that an Encore 25/06 barrel with the proper handloads should be good for 3/4 inches or less.

I have the exact rifle you spoke of. TC prohunter Camo 25-06. It will shoot 9/16'' groups at 100. (3 shot groups). This is with factory  Fed. 117 speer hotcore bullets.
Also have a 22-250 that will make all holes touch at 100 with Rem fac 50 gr. Accutips.
Will have a 7mag by next year and hope for the same results.
All I have shot is fac.up to this point.
I say go for it.

i'd like to know the OAL to the rifling,
At the nominal COL, what's the distance of the bullet from the rifling (land ) ?

Yes, i just start the breakin-in.
But, lack of time, i just fire 6 shot throug it. ( winchester 120gr factory )
But after 6 shot the last 3 i've fire were in the V-bull ( 3 inch )at 150meter, with absolutely no effor.
Like i said i was in a breakin-in session, not really trying to see what i can get from it.
last week i've order a 375h&h barrel for it...i cant wait to try it too....
In 2 weeks i gonna have more time, start reloading the 25-06 and try to find THE load.
I've bought Nosler 100gr Bal-tip, and Nosler 110gr Accubond.

I went to the range today
Distance to target =250 yards.
Strange: the first 4 shot goes in the upper side of the target with a grouping of 4 inch.
Last time i've fire with it was at 150 yards Bullseye.

Afetr a walk to the target and patching the target, i Fired 3 shot
And those 3 goes right where they should go, 4-5 inch lower of the center of the target.
And a grouping of 1 1/8 inch.
So, What happen ?? i dont really know, and still scratching my head with two head ???
My ammo are Factory Winchester 120gr.
And a Problem, i dont know if some of you have this problem, But!
On 7 shot, 2 Brass refused to extract, and required a push from my cleaning rod.
Looks like the extractor of the pro-hunter is not perfect.....???
I didnt start to reload yet, but the furur looks interesting. except for the extractor.

In regards to the first 4 high shots, my bet is that you cleaned the barrel, oiled it and left oil in the barrel when you went out to shoot.  Because of increased pressure, if you leave oil in a rifle barrel, the first few shots will be high.  This can be avoided by removing the oil with a solvent such as Shooters Choice, Prolix, Microlon Gun Juice, etc. before you shoot.

As for the extraction problem, if the two you had problems with were with the first 4 shots, then the high pressure made the cases expand excessively and extraction difficult.  If the extractor slipped over the rim of the cartridge whilst failing to extract it, then it's an extractor problem.

A couple of the guys I'm going antelope hunting with in a few weeks are taking Encores in 25/06.  I had the privilege of working up a load for them using 100 grain Sierra Gameking bullets.  I shot the loads in both a Pro Hunter and in an older Encore.  The load with H4831SC shot about 1 inch at 100 yards (3 shot groups) in both.  A different bullet might improve that a bit.  I would think 0.5 to 0.75 inches should be attainable.

Thank's for the answer, The brass is not hard to pull, Looks like the extractor, slip, it just dont grab the empty shell.

That"s why i'm scratching my head, I know about oil and product, After the clean-up and before shooting i make sure with a patch,
Soaked with Lighter gaz to remove any lubriquant left in the barrel.....
That's why i really dont understand, I will try again tomorrow to see the result by curiosity.

I had an extractor problem with one T/C barrel.  I sent it to the factory where the extractor and a spring were replaced and now it works fine.

I had another barrel that would send the first few shots high.  I sent that back to the factory as well.  They recrowned the muzzle and lapped the bore and I've had no more trouble with that barrel either.  Throwing shots different places as a gun is shot can also be a problem with inadequate heat treatment of the barrel.

Wandering points of impact/groups can generally be remedied with an oversized hinge pin along with a check of the forearm for evenness or pressure.

Yesterday, was the second shooting session for the Prohunter.

Accuracy was at the Rendez-vous,
grouping were between 0.500 and 0.770
3 shot group at 100 meters.


But I'm not satisfied at all

I paid this rifle 1000$ Canadian

And on the 20 round i have fired yesterday,
The extractor failed completely on 9 round, Had to use my cleaning rod to push the brass out.
AND, the hammer don't hit the primer with enough power every 3-4 round..so i have to re-cock, then it fired...
On that, 2 shell need 3 hammer cocking to make it happen...

Am I satisfied ???


I have to return the rifle, and THAT its what i call: Pain in the ass.

I'm in Canada, send back the rifle to my store,, then his going to send it to T/C...then Reverse...I'm not sure i gonna have my rifle back for the next fall....

AND i have order 2 month ago a Barrel for this ProHunter..POJunk. in 375 H&H..
I'm really not sure what i gonna do....really not.....


BTW, My English maybe suck a bit...but I'm pretty sure you have understand the idea...

Give T/C a call,and see what they say. I've had nothing but good service from them,and it is allot faster than you think too. I've sent guns/parts back,and had them back in two weeks time.Great service! Ron

$1000 seems high to me for a Pro Hunter, but I am not in Canada.  And anything made by man is open to problems.

I already own a Thompson Center Encore, with 3 Barrel ; .50cal , 22-250, 7mm.
With no problem, it was 8 years ago.
When i bought my Prohunter Rifle,
I was with a Buddy of mine,
He bought the BlackPowder 50 cal.. Prohunter.
He sent an email the 29 december at the TC service center..with no reply to date...

I have bought the Prohunter at Québec city, 500 km from my home at Latulippe store wich is too a service point i think. I don't go to québec city often and if i can solve a little problem by myself, i would appreciate and prefer
 
The problem is: at the back of the bridge over the trigger (i hope i use the good words, i'm a french canadian) there is a little black pin which get out by a little hole at least 2 millimeters just beside the beginning of the stock. This pin seems to be too long, when i want to move the "bridge" for opening the barrel for put or remove a primer, this pin touch too much the inside of the stock and it is really hard to open the gun. I can open the system but by using a lot of force, i don't like that and it is not normal. A friend has an encore .50 with a wood stock and his one open really softly
 
I see 3 solutions:
 
with a Dremel little grinder, work a little bit the interior of the stock
 
with the Dremel tool, remove 1millimeter of metal at the extremity of the pin (i'm afraid about rust after?????)
 
bring my gun to the store the next time i will go to Quebec city (but i don't want to loose it a long time) If the gunsmith will do the same thing (solution 1 or 2) i prefer to do it by myself
 
Hoping to have good counseling about my trouble

First you paid too much and the groups aren't that bad. I could live with it. Second your buddy needs to send his gun back or else is voiding his warranty if I understood him. He send the Email at the wrong time. Tell him to resend it. T/c was closed then and it probably got mixed in with a bunch of other emails. T/c was closed for Christmas and New Years so just resend it now and he should get a reply. They aren't going to tell him anything but to send it back. Can you explain to me what he said better? I don't quite get what is wrong?

26" 25-06 at 100 yards with 85grn nosler and 52 grains of 4350...

I plan on working on it some more this spring but... it dropped a doe in her tacks this year. ;D

After 5 1/2 weeks , I have absolutely NO news from them,  i have try to reach them many times by phone , always speaking to the answering machine. Finally tonight I've called till i got a real Answer, and i got one at 19h15 SET.
They gonna change the barrel,
Wow ! for a brand new rifle ...its nice to know!
Well, seems barrel are hard to get at this time, and hopefully they gonna have it in 1 month, maybe 2....
They gonna let me know...
Wow, very great service, Buy a brand new rifle, and send it back for 3 month, maybe more....
Yes, Great Product quality control...

As an alternative, Groundhog hunting time come pretty fast, and i put all my $$$ in this rifle...
The only way for me to shoot them now, Buy a Slingshot....good news ! i gonna have 1-2 month to practice...

Never had a problem with T/C. All their products are up to my standards at. With humans playing a role everything can't be perfect. Sounds like you are having a very hard time and I am not sure why.

Well back in the days before S&W bought them they actually did have excellent customer service in fact until several years they really were the shining example of what customer service should be. The last time I dealt with them however things were not so rosy. I have to wonder if the buy out has adversely affected service.

This is complicated by a secondary service center in Canada.  I am sure that any problems are complicated by the across the border issues with firearms.

I really don't like bashing any firearms manufacturer, especially one who builds firearms in the good ol' USA. However, my experience with Thompson Center's customer service department has been dismal. They don't have the decency to pick up the phone during regular business hours. Messages left on the answering machine are probably DELETED because they fail to call you back even though the answering machine instructs you to leave your number so that can return your call. Worse than all of this, I have been give erroneous information, by uninformed employees, on more than one occasion.

Reading this post only tells me that TC hasn't learned anything in the last year. What a SHAME! :-\

The odd thing is that so many of us have had great experiences with TC.  I have at 10 of their firearms and a bunch of Contender barrels and have had at least a dozen times over the past 20 years to contact them for parts or service.  They have never failed to satisfy me, in fact in most cases go beyond my expectations.  I never have not had a call returned promptly, and the turn around on repairs has been quite quick. This includes work done in the last few weeks.
