.38 S&W
« on: April 02, 2007, 01:50:47 PM »
Anybody have any load data for .38 S&W?  I have a police positive that I have been working up loads for.  So far I have had pretty good luck with 4.7 grains Unique under a Speer 125 grain JSP.  I have also been trying a 158 grain cast swc over 2.4 grains of Red Dot. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with .38 S&W.
Thanks

Don't know if anyone is interested but I tried a new load today,
2.8 grians of Unique
CCI 500 primer
158 swc
Still to much snow to get to the range and properly test and chronograph, but they seemed to shoot pretty well.  I didn't know if anyone else loads for/shoots a .38 S&W (.38 Colt New Police, .380/200)

2.5 to 3 grs. of Bullseye should shoot as good as anything you find under a 158 gr. bullet.

I have only been able to find lead bullets of the proper diameter,'
Does someone make a jacketed bullet for the .38 S&W ?
My Enfield doesn't shoot .357 diameter worth a crap..
It needs a .360-.361..

MOst of the load data companies have data. Low demand. You have to ask.  It is not meant to be strong. Dates from days of black powder. Light loads by today's standards. You can buy custom bullets from swage.com directory. Web site belongs to Corbin and lists bullet makers that use Corbin equipment. They will make anything you will pay for, but not cheap. Easier and more authentic to go with lead bullets. A few moulds still around to cast that large. And at normal pressures, about any alloy should be o.k. (if it casts). luck.

I guess I've been kinda lucky, mine has been shooting both the .357 125 jsp and the .358 cast LSWC pretty well.  What I always worry about is how much pressure I'm generating. Granted the police positive is much stronger than the old break tops but it is still a pretty old gun. It was made between 1917 and 1922 depending on who's website you look it up on.

OK, today I tried Remington 125 JSP, 4.5 grains of Unique, and a CCI 500 primer.  The accuracy was excellent, and the velocity through my Shooting Chrony averaged 996 FPS.   I think this is the load I'm going to stay with. It actually makes the .38 S&W a worthwild cartridge.
