lube and powder
« on: April 03, 2007, 11:42:17 PM »
Hi Veral,
I use an RCBS lubamatic II to resize my bullets. There is always a small amount of lube at the base of the bullet (mostly at the edges) which I diligently wipe off. This takes a finite amount of time and over the course of several hundred bullets can significantly add to my reloading time.

I am now using the LBT blue soft lube having completely switched over from the standard alox-beeswax mix.

The question is "Will a small amount of blue soft contaminate my powder and inactivate to a significant degree?"

Or am I just wasting my time "gilding the lily" here?

What I have always done through the years when wondering about a thing like this is run a quick test.  In this case, smear an extra blob on and see what happens.  -- Nothing will happen that you can measure unless a large amount of lube is put on intentionally, to make a grease wad for example, in which case it will  slightly improve performance of plainbase, if the ammo isn't exposed to enough heat to melt the wad and wet powder prior to shooting.

The traces left from sizing will not wet enough powder that you can read it on a chronograph.  Don't worry about it again.
