Got a question for S&W .460 owners?

I've read that forcing cone life with this .460 cartridge velocities isn't very long, I'd like to know a round count you would expect with .454 velocities? Those sleeved barrels have kept me away from the gun. I know S&W has said they would replace a barrel that has been shot out but, who wants a gun back at the factory when hunting season comes around? Are my worries unfounded? I'd like to let the growing pains get all ironed out before I pay the kind of money they're asking for these things.

What you read is not true, yes you will get some wear from them fast 200 gr bullets in the forcing cone, but not much if at all with slower bullets. I have about 1500 plus rounds of heavy 300 gr. cast bullets through mine, with no wear at all.  But what you read and what was post before is not true. The barrels have a longer life than some wrote about. Also call S&W and talk to the tech department.

Do you EVER have anything of value to add to a thread?  Yes the gun manufacturer will give you the correct information. I am so sick of these comments from people here,  I have had it with all the smart comments. Why can't people just answer the question without the sarcasm ??

Redhawk1, how are you measuring wear, in your forcing cone? Just visiual or by some guaging set up? If guaging, what dadum are you using?

Is the barrel wearing out that bad of a problem? You have to expect that it will wear out at some time with that amount of pressure.

The barrels are the same tension system as the Dan-Wesson and their replacement 10" barrel is only $110.00, I understand that you have to send the gun to S&W to change.

What is the cost of a barrel replacement from S&W?

David, I think your addressing something different than what I asked? The time to, at  and from the factory is my main concern. Especially during hunting season. To answer your question:  I understand that in today's world, many have the money to spend on such things but, life just isn't that good for me, right now.

No I am on the same page, It would be nice to know at XXXX rounds of max loads the barrel starts to have problems. That will be hard to get an answer because every gun and loads will be different.

It is not uncommon for competition shooters to use up a barrel.

I just thought on the same page has anyone looked onto replacing the barrel, and how much did S&W say it would cost to change?

David Carey, there is no magic number of rounds for barrel replacement, when the 460 first came out, people that had nothing better than put numbers out were saying 1500 to 2000 rounds the barrel would have to be replaced. Well, I have about 2000 rounds through mine with no ill effect at all. I suggest you call S&W and talk to the tech department and they would be able to give you all the information you need.

Two things I should of done in 2004. I should of lined up a tour of S&W plant and went to see the Springfield Armory Museum. You don't know how lucky you are to be as close to these as you are. Never go to visit my son in Gloucester Ma., again, without seeing these.
