Thanks Guys..
Yes Salvo, I did normalize it, do what grinding and drilling was necessary, then harden and draw a temper. You can get info about that process over in the knives forum..
Now, for that "thuty-thuty"..what a joy to use a rifle for deer hunting..I got my buck this past season at about 40 yards. A broadside hit in the chest with a 170gr Winchester power point and that buck did a complete back flip...ending up in the same direction he had been facing.
An interesting sidelight..when the "shotgun only season" was dropped in our county a couple years ago, I actually bought a Remington model 7600, all-weather pump rifle in .308 for a deer rifle and the grandson mentioned above bought the Marlin.
We go to my woods together to sight them in..That Rem was a bit awkward for this seven decades old blacksmith to hold..and that slide was a bit too far away for my comfort..while the Marlin was just about right.
My long, tall grandson on the other hand found the Rem to fit nicely...we swapped on the spot and I have been very happy ever since..even though my grandson got a couple hunderd $$ better deal on me ! ...But that's what grandpas are for..right ?
