Which Rings?
« on: April 04, 2007, 01:40:04 PM »
Hey everybody, I'm new to this forum and I just received my first handi yesterday. Its in .30-06 and soon to be shipped for a 45-70 barrel for Mississippi. I'm wondering what type of rings everybody uses with the 45-70. I'm a Warne man myself but with the aluminum base I thought I'd ask. I'm sure the recoil is going to be in the 41 lb range. I plan on reloading probably the 350 grain speer with a BC of .232 and hot-cor platform possibly with H4198 or IMR4895 (cuz I already have 7lbs). Any opinions? I shoot a 125 grain speer hot-cor in .357 win lever with H-110 that puts coyote's down. I just like them I guess. Any way I've been reading some very interesting things in this forum for the past week. Maybe I missed it or didn't find any thing but does any one shoot Hornady 180 grain RN in .30-06? I love 'em for close range work with H4350.
I've enjoyed the forum very much and thankful for the expertise on Handi's.

Welcome aboard vinpar092, I have no experience with Warne rings but understand they are top shelf. I like and use Millet Angle Locs with great success but others here dislike them, The old Chevy Ford argument. I am sure others here will soon chime in with their likes and dislikes. This is a great place, come often and stay late, you are among friends here....<><.... :)

Burris Signature Zee Rings are tops as far as I am concerned. They have inserts that align and clamp without tending to bend the scope. No ring lapping is required.

Ditto McLernon's thoughts, mounting a scope just doesn't get any better that with Burris Sig Zees. Ask Lik2hunt what he thinks about em, the Japan built Tasco scope I just sold him had only been mounted in Sig Zees, not a mark on it, and it had been mounted on at least 2 different rifles after I got it.

Mediums will usually work, just depends on the scope, usually with a little judicious dremel trimming of the hammer spur above the extension, mediums will offer enough clearance. ;)

Thanks for the additional info Tim. I was concerned about the clearance of the hammer spur and that's what sparked me to ask about the rings. I guess I should have asked if anyone used aluminum rings with the base. I also like Burris rings. I have some on a .22 mag.

By the way Tim, I see you love *** your 338-06. I've been trying to talk myself into re-barreling to that caliber for years
