side to side play
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:58:02 PM »
I've got about 80 rounds through my .25-06 ultra now, and love the way it shoots. The other day I was getting it out to shoot, and I noticed some side to side play where the barrel meets the receiver. With one hand on the buttstock and the other on the forearm, I can move the breech side to side. It locks up fine, I did have a few pop opens back in subzero temps, but none since. Is this movement normal, if not ,what is excessive? Any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

                                                                                               thanks

HH

Was this with the barrel closed or open ? if open it may be just a case of the forend spacer needing to be shimed as it may have compressed a little bit being plastic , now if it is when closed that can be a bad thing .

Unfortunately, it needs to go back to H&R for proper fitting, probably a new barrel. Give em a call at their toll free number (866)776-9292, and make arrangements for them to fix it, have them reimburse you for shipping or issue a UPS call tag. Also make sure that you include a note with the problem so the gunsmith knows what's up. It wouldn't hurt to give em a call a day or two after they receive it to make sure they're working on it and will get it back to you right away. ;)

thanks for the speedy response. I had that nagging feeling in the back of my mind, that it would need to go back. Kinda bummed out, but looking for a silver lining. I guess this would be a good time to go ahead and get that .357 barrel while it's there.

Yup, maybe a 45 Colt Carbine barrel too, and a free trigger job if it needs it! ;)
