Will Shotshells hurt my ruger?
« on: April 05, 2007, 08:26:02 AM »
Gonna start packing my GP100 fishing this year and want to load it with CCI shotshells for snakes.  Do these things harm the rifling in the gun or are they okay to shoot?

Thanks

Shotshells should be fine in your GP100...the lead pellets are pretty soft and won't damage the riling.

Naw!  Shouldn't hurt a thing.  But, if you're really worried then send me your gun and all your ammo and stuff and I'll shoot the snot outta it just to make sure.  Of course, you can do that yourself and save some money on postage.

gunblade is right about the soft lead pellets not harming your rifling.  The shotshells you choose may use some sort of a plastic cup to hold the shot in place as it travels down the barrel so as to give you some degree of a pattern from a rifled barrel, or it may not, which is why shotshells for pistols and revolvers don't carry for any great distances.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I've loaded Speer Shot Cups for years with #9 or # 10 shot. Used them in my old Blackhawk & Colt with great results. Does a number on snakes.  I HATE SNAKES.  :o :o

Won't hurt, kind of like throwing a bunch of rubber tennis balls down a cement hallway, might make some marks on the walls, but dont hurt anything.

nothing a little hoppes solvent wont fix, actually with the pressure, probably leaves less leading than a normal bullet

Most of the shot shells for pistols have the lead shot contained in a plastic container which also has a plastic (type) of gas check.  The shot is pushed through the barrel of the gun, and the lead never touches the barrel.

I have been loading my own with a plastic case for years, I buy the cases from Speer, or from Midway.  I usually load 50 at a time, and when they are close to gone, I load 50 more.  They last for quite a while.

To keep things simple, I cut the end off a couple of 12 gauge #9, and use the shot from that to load with.  If you know a skeet shooter, they may give you enough to load 50 rounds or so.

It won't hurt your gun.
