270 Winchester factory ammo
« on: April 05, 2007, 09:37:46 AM »
Thinking of trying Federal Premium 130 ballistic tips to see what kinda groups I can get. Am also thinking of trying the Remingston 100 Grain cor lokts. Anyone have any experience with any of these? :-\

Well Remington's 100 grain offering isn't a "Corelokt" but a pointed soft point. I have never seen them for sale either. Odds are any factory loading with a ballistic tip bullet will be accurate. My favorite factory load is the Winchester 150 grain Power Point.  Good on ga,me performance and you get good brass to reload.

The only two factory loads I've used in the .270 Winchester are Hornady's Custom load with 140 BTSP and the Federal Premium with 150 Nosler PT. Both have shot sub MOA in all my .270s and have done all I can ask of a .270 Winchester. I see no need for any other.

I don't see any reason for bullets weighin' more'n 130 grains, unless you want to shoot griz in yore petunia patch. The old standards were developed for this cartridge, it's been around since 1924 and the ammo companies have all the bugs worked out. If your rifle has a 24" barrel they will match the old velocity of 3140 fps at the muzzle.  ;)

Hornady's Custom load with 140 BTSP

+1   These are God's gift to .270 owners. Their 140 gr. BTSP light mag is really nice too, but IMO the small difference in power isn't worth the extra money and recoil. Both shoot under an inch out of mine.

Just so happens my 270 win is an Interarms with a 24" brl. I was using 3060 fps for looking at the ballistics. I know at some point in time the fps was revised down to 3060. Are you saying that the ballistics were revised to be more accurate with a 22" brl. which is more common? Have you chrono'd the 130 factory ammo?
By the way, I had a Ruger M77 270 that loved the Fed Premium 130 BT. Would shoot 1/2" - 5/8" 100 groups all day with 3 x 9 scope and factory trigger. Like an idiot, I sold it.......  :(

Speer data for factory .270 ammo, all in a 22" barrel:

Ammo........Actual MV
130 RP.........2849
130 WW.......3058
150 Horn......2645
150 RP.........2652
150 WW.......2710

The only one which might reach 3140 in a 24" barrel is the WW 130 load.

I have never understood why it has always been so hard to find a company that offered the 270 with a 24" instead of the 22". Seems like the full potential is not being realized with a 22". Have had several 270s with the 22" and this has always frustrated me. A 24" on the 270 with 130 gr will be awful close the 7mm Mag with 140 in ballistics with alot less recoil. By the way, I have a Ruger Mk II in 7mm Mag and the recoil difference is very obvious. Did buy some 130 Fed Premiums Ballistic Tips and will try those as soon as I can get to the range. Have tried the Fed Power Shok 130 before but ballistic tips should tighten up the group. We'll see............. ;)

They offer a few with the 24" barrel. The 700 SPS comes with one. Hard to beat the price on those too. I love mine.

Anyone who thinks that two inches more barrel length will make any noticeable difference in field performance is deluding themselves.   Two factual data points:  in May 1992 G&A tested the velocity differences in a .280 Remington (virtually identical to the .270) as they cut the barel back from 24".   Here is what they found:

Factory 140-grain PSP
24"...2876 fps
23"...2863
22"...2821
21"...2807
20"...2747
19"...2758
18"...2682

In the October 2003 issue of RifleShooter a similar test was performed with a .270 WCF rifle:

Handload with 130-grain bullet and H4350 powder
27"...3115 fps
26"...3093
25"...3071
24"...3054
23"...3035
22"...3027
21"...3001

These tests show an average loss of just 41 fps between a 24" and a 22" barrel.....a meaningless difference.  Most ammunition has a greater velocity difference between shots than that.  It is no wonder that most factory barrels are 22" long - there is nothing to be gained by using a 2" longer barrel.

Since I think the 24" looks better and I like the balance I would just as soon keep it and the extra fps.

As I'm not reloading at the present time, I've been shooting the blue box Federals......$11 a box.....and they shoot great!

This is a temporary situation.....should be reloading again very soon!

...i reload with Nosler ballistic tips. Started with 150's, had a problem with shooting through and through. Backed off to 110's, real good expansion, has dropped every deer i've shot with them.

I have been reloading the .270 for years, but I have bought a lot of factory ammo when on sale.  One such item was a few boxes of WW 150 grain Power Pts.  Accuracy was terrible in my M760, which normally shots anything good.  But twenty years later I grabbed a couple of boxes of it to sight in a new scope on a M700.  As I recall the advertised velocity was 2900 fps.  Measured velocity over my Chrony at fifteen feet at 6200-foot elevation was 2727 fps from a 22-inch barrel.  While the ballistics were disappointing the accuracy was good.  Good enough in fact that I chose to hunt with that load and found it very effective on deer.  I still have a few boxes of the same lot number.  I am now hoarding it for hunting.  I have been impressed with the WW Power Pt. bullet in other calibers.

I have had success with a number of factory loads in the .270 and have a lot of respect for the 150 grain Remington C-L.  They are accurate and normally fully penetrate a deer on a crossing shot.

I have had success with other bullets, but the subject is factory loads.

The discussion has crept into barrel length.  I was surprised that my Savage 110 in 270 Winchester has a faster 22-inch barrel then my Remington 700 with a 22-inch barrel.  At one time I was thinking about buying a 24-inch factory take-off barrel for the M700.  But I decided the cost may not bring any benefits, and I could be giving up an accurate 22-inch barrel.

Actually it was an article in either "Handloader" or "Rifle" magazine. I don't keep an index but if you got to Wolfe Publishing's web site, an e-mail might get you the number of the magazine that had the article.

:o  You're shooting deer with 110 grainers?!  Which bullets and load if I may ask? I used those on jackrabbits and coyotes for years......     Behind the shoulder I bet those deer drop! I am still using the 150 ballistic tips loaded hot as I can get them and the seem not to over penetrate but stop inside....(I should post a picture of an ill fated hunt..).

Interesting.....

The 110-grain Sierras are listed as hunting bullets not varmint bullets, and they work well at long range.  The Hornady 110s are varmint bullets and are too soft IMO.

A co-worker used 110-grain Sierra's on deer for years.  When I gave my son a 12-year-old son a .270 Win.  I started him out on accurate low recoil loads.  The load was 54 grains of H4831 with the Sierra 110 grain bullet.  A pleasant load to shot.

I load my 110gr bullets for deer at 3300 FPS out of a 26" barrel but with my 22" barrel I think they go about 3200 or 3150 FPS.

I have a push feed Model 70 that shoots sub-MOA with both Federal Premium and Power Shock 130 gr factory loads.  Took it to the range this Saturday and had a great time with an old friend. ;D   Rev

Federal Fusions are very accurate, but I think they only come in 150's..........

No, they're also available with 130 grain bullets.

Though it appears some guys use them, I personally would never use 110 grain bullets for deer hunting! The minimum bullet weight I would use is 130 grains, and even those can be a little light for my taste. I believe the 110 grain bullets are WAY too light to provide the penetration and performance I want!

My personal choice would be a quality 140 or 150 grain bullet; 140 Nosler Accubond or Partition, 140 Hornady or the 150 Nosler Partition. The only 130 grain bullet I would "try" would be the 130 Barnes Triple Shock, or 130 Nosler Partition.
