Steyr M95 8 x 56R
« on: April 05, 2007, 05:18:09 PM »
Dunhams has these rifles "on sale" this week for 149 bucks. These rifles are rich in history and I am tempted since I find them very interesting. I was surprised to discover Hornady makes ammo for this rifle in  8 x 56R loaded with a 205 grain soft point. Any one have any experience with this rifle?

You guys have gotten me inspired.  I have a pretty nice M95 Budapest with a hundred rounds that I acquired about 20 years ago.  The ammo dates to the 1930's, I believe.  I don't have any clips.  Anyway, it has been a safe queen for a long time.  I need to get it out!  I have never shot it.  I never knew Hornady carried this round either.

I bought one from Southern Ohio Guns a few months ago. Looked OK on the outside, I never expected a new gun, but I had to put the butt on the floor and stamp on the bolt handle to open it. I cleaned and smoothed it up and got it to work a bit better but it still could not be operated easily so I returned it and the case of ammo without a shot fired. I'm sure they are not all so bad and it's not the first time I've gotten junk from SOG. The phone girl said that with the extra $10.00 for the "hand picked" rifles you generally get something better but I was no longer enchanted with the idea. They do look neat though.

The rear sight is way forward making for a short sight site radius.

Cheeshead & SS,
Sorry, I didn't reply back in April.  I just hadn't checked this thread anymore!

Cheese, the bore is great - clean and shiny.

SS, I would love to have a clip or two and be glad to pay for it.  I'll PM you.

A note on new production ammo.:  Hornady isn't making this ammo. directly.  They have a contract account with Graf & Sons.  They make the bullets exclusively for Graf & Sons and Graf & Sons loads and sells it.

So it is available, but not as widely available as other products bearing the Hornady name.  I mention this because I live in a state that doesn't allow buying ammo. online and it screws me over.  Otherwise, I'd have one of these rifles myself by now, they look sweet.

I picked up 2 Steyr carbines this spring with bayonet and scabbard for $130 each. The action is not nearly as smooth as a Schmidt Rubin and is on the light side which makes the recoil severe, 20 rounds and I am shot out for the day with this rifle. SOG has ammo for the Steyr in mixed dates without the stripper clips, I reload the clips that I picked up at a gun shop. If you want this rifle get it while you can before they dry up.

Hello...

I reload for my M95/34 using Graf 205 gr. bullets and Graf brass.  As I recall, I use 45gr. of IMR 3031.  I understand that loads used for the rimmed 7.62mm Russian caliber work well in 8X56R.  I do not shoot mine often, but everytime I do, I enjoy it.  I enjoy the stout recoil, and the impressive hole.  When I shoot, I have to flip up the ladder sight and use the notch at the bottom of the ladder to be able to get on paper.  Usually I have to adopt a POA about 6-8" below the bull.  It is a neat rifle, and would be a blast for hunting game, as I imagine there would be quite a large hole punched through game.   However, it is a fairly short range proposition.  I doubt that 100 yard accuracy would be much to write home about.  I think it would be fine for hunting in my home state of Maine.

Cheers,
Gary

why not reload with a cast bullet at about 180gr.it would save the bore and give lighter recoil.
hornady loads the ammo graf supplys the cases I believe made by Privi Partisian.I calleds hornady and asked.
