Range report on my Handi 22-250
« on: April 05, 2007, 09:20:36 PM »
Hello

Last week I got to the range on Sunday with my Dicks Special Handi in 22-250 only to have problems with the rifle not grouping well. It drove me up a wall it did not matter which ammo I used the Remington 50 Gn. or the Winchester WB 40 Gn. JHP. I had plans to shoot it at 50yards then go to 100yards but it did not happen. As it turned out the scope became loose and I did not catch it till I was ready to go home. Between cleaning every couple of shots and the bad groupings I managed to shoot (waste) 40 rounds of ammo (I do need empty cases to reload). I do not which of the ammo I tried worked best on this day but with six rounds left I shot the target below there are the group that is circled, ammo Winchester WB 40Gn. JHP.

I got to the range yesterday with a clean rifle and with the scope TIGHT. I wanted to shoot at 50 & 100 yards but Mother Nature was not to friendly on this day, it was snowing and it was near white out for a bit. That and the cold temps and wind. I shot at 50 yards I fired three shots and they were in a ½” group, high left. I adjust the scope and it moved in the right direction and stayed there. I proceeded to fire the rest of the box of ammo right were it was, and I still needed more empty cases. Things of note after the first round the extractor did not remove the empty, had to close the action and open it with authority, and seems that the cold temperature was playing havoc on the lube I was using. Below are a few pictures one being the target I shot. Things are starting to come together. The next time out I hope to have my hand loads ready to go.

April 5 2007 go figure??

One last thing when I got home from the range I received a phone call; it was form Dicks Sporting Goods. It seems that I had used an abbreviation for the month of my birth and would I please come out and correct it. So Friday I will be going to Dicks.

Have a great day

Do you have an extractor or ejector barrel? Ejectors throw the case out, extractors just lift it out a little. If you have an early extractor and it isn't working, you'll need to send it in for repair, they switched to a different extractor later that is simpler and works well. If it's an ejector, there should be no lube to speak of, use a dry lube if anything, then it won't attract dust and temperature won't affect it. Wet lube on the extractor/ejector can also get on the latch causing accuracy problems, it needs to be dry. If the chamber or ammo is dirty or wet, cases will stick in an ejector barrel, an extractor barrel may be hard to open.  You can increase spring tension to help that issue on an ejector, that info is covered in the FAQs. ;)

Hello

Tim both of my Handis have extractor, casings lifted just high enough to pull spent casing out with fingers. After it happened I cleaned the chamber and wiped off some lube and it was fine for the rest of the session.

Have a great day
