357 Herrett
« on: April 06, 2007, 07:05:24 PM »
For those of you who currently own or have owned a 357 Herrett, what barrel length do you prefer?  I already have the dies and brass for a 357 Herrett and would like to put them to work.  I am considering a purchasing a new 10" 357 Magnum barrel and having it rechambered.

Otherwise, would I be better off just having a custom barrel from OTT?

Thanks,

Dave

I have a 10 in. 357 Herrett barrel and find that length very handy.  If you have the funds at hand, and want a really good barrel, get one of the custom barrel makes to make you one.  You could have a 357 Mag. rechambered to 357 Herrett but I'm kind of picky in wanting what the barrel says to match what goes in the chamber.  Rather than I rechamber, I would prefer a factory 357 Herrett barrel (what I have).

Either route would be fine to take.  I own a 10" barrel chambered for .357 Herrett.  The round was designed around the 10" barrel length, if that makes any difference to you.  I taken many deer with mine and it's a good performer.

Grumulkin & MS Hitman:

Who made your 357 Herrett barrel for you?  I have two other contender barrels from Bullberry Barrel Works but have heard excellent things about barrels from OTT.

I have been very happy with my Bullberry barrels.

My 357 Herrett barrel is from the T/C factory.  If I were to have a barrel made, I would probably get an OTT barrel but I'm sure other barrel makers deliver good barrels as well.

I came very close to getting an SSK barrel once until I found out that the synthetic factory forends wouldn't fit it.  Make sure that the barrel you get will work with the other accessories you wish to use.

I had a 10" .357 Herrett years ago but it is long gone.  In a 14" I'd prefer my .35 Remington but the performance of either is similar in that length.  Velocities from the Lyman #46 Manual:

.357 Herrett Load......10".........14"
125HP/2400............1929.......2134
158 HP/IMR4227.....1717.......1847
200RN/IMR4198......1646.......1786

My barrel is a T/C factory barrel.  I have several SSk barrels and no problems with the hangers for the Pachmyer foreends.

Here are the prices I have found for a blued 10" 357 Herrett.

T/C Custom shop-$225
Bullberry Barrel Works-$299
OTT-$345
SSK-$345

I guess it all depends on what I want to spend.  On Monday I will be placing an order with Bullberry for a blued 10" Contender Bull barrel in 357 Herrett.  I'm not sure what rate of twist they offer.  I would prefer a 1:12 if possible, othewise 1:14 will do fine.

Should take about 4 months to get the barrel.  Just in time for hunting season.

I have one in a mag-na-ported TC 10" Bull and love it.  I use both
Pachmeyer Forearm and Grip.  The 357 Herrett was developed for
the 10" barrel.
