Custom Marlin 1895 loadings
« on: April 07, 2007, 01:40:08 PM »
Is there any real advantage in custom chambering the marlin 1895 in anything over the .45-70?
Garret and Buffalo Bore offer .45-70 magnum loadings that have successfully taken the biggest animals on this planet.
What real world advantages are there in cartridges like .457 wild west magnum, .50 Alaskan, and .510 Kodiak?

These custom chamberings are indeed great, but what more would anybody need than a 400-500g hardcast bullet from a modern loaded 45-70?

There is no real world advantage to the 457 WWG Magnum over the 45-70.  The 50 Alaskan is definitely a step up from the 45-70.  I've often considered a rebarrel to the 475 GNR (45-70 expanded to accept the .475" bullet), but even that would be a marginal increase in real world effect.

IF A HANDLOADED 45/70 CAN'T KILL IT, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN INTO AN ARGUEMENT WITH IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

I have a WWG 457.  There is little difference between the hotter 45/70 loads and the 457 loads.  I feel a little better about loading hot loads in the 457 though.
