Case Lube Recommendations?
« on: April 08, 2007, 05:42:42 AM »
What case lubricant would you recommend? Just recently purchased a RCBS partner press to replace my old $10 Lee loader and I need some help on what kind to use. Looks like some types might affect the powder or primer. What's best and/or easiest? Thanks!

buy a can of Imperial Sizing wax, it will last you a lifetime and is not messy nor will it interfere with dropping powder in the case

What Hairtrigger said!
I found out after years of using the other stuff and wondering why the lube dents were appearing even though I thought I was being very careful.

It depends mostly on how you want to apply your lube.  I lube one at a time with my fingers so I use Imperial Die Wax or something similar.   For larger quantities and using a pad for application, I sometimes use RCBS, Lee, etc, but any of the pad type lubes work fine.  For really large quantities, I would use a spray lube such as Hornady's "One Shot".

None of them are bad for powder or primers if used correctly.

Hornady One Shot is all I use, never stuck or dented a case, I think when used as directed, it works great!

Hey guys,I have used the Lyman Quik spay case lube for over 10 years now and never had a problem with it.I have tried the Hornady and also the RCBS SPRAY LUBES but always go back to the Lyman.
I just line up 50 cases in an old cookie tray and give one spray on one side then do the other, easiest way to do it.
I never had any problems with contaminateing the powder. Some older loads were done 5 or 6 years ago and they are still perfect.

The reason I like Imperial so much over spray lubes is that I reload mostly 22 calibers. The spray lube can get on the inside of the neck and cause powder to stick. This is especially bad when using stick powder (4895 is a favorite of mine)

go to the pharmacy and order or buy a tub of anhydrous lanolin. Put it on your fingers and rub just a touch on the case. its the best lube ive found and a tub will last a lifetime.

+2

I've used it for years and like it better than any lube I have ever used. I don't think there is a better lube on the market.

I must be using the Imperial Sizing Wax wrong.  I like it the best of any lubes I have tried, but I always seem to get my share of dents in the brass.

Bullseye, use less.  We only need a VERY thin coat on the neck and shoulder, just a little bit heavier down around the base.  If you get dents you are still using far too much.

I am in agreement that very little is needed.  But I use about as little as I can.  I will keep trying though, because I still like it better than any other lubes I have used.  I actually only use it for 375 win and 45-70 since I neck size my bottleneck brass and just dip the neck in mica for that.

I make my own, its cheap, easy to clean off and it works. There are two things that I dislike about most of the lubes: it is far too easy to get too much on the case and end up with dented shoulders and it is too hard to clean up. You might as well be using "STP" or Hilton's "Hyper-lube".
The spray-on stuff is OK but it is wasteful, some of it always ends up on the floor or table.
The wax is OK but I just never found a good way to apply it.
I use a piece of soft wood about fifteen inches by six inches with two layers of cotton twill tacked to it. I wet it down with a mix of ATF and just a touch of the RCBS lube. About five drops per ounce of automatic transmission fluid is all it takes to make it work. When I run out of the RCBS case lube I plan on using Hilton's Hyper-lube in it's place. The cloth is not "wet" with the oil but it puts just enough on to lube the cases. When a case starts to get sticky I add a little lube to the pad. I can lube six to ten cases at once and I don't feel like I have to go wash my hands after each pass with the cases.
