swapping scopes
« on: April 09, 2007, 06:37:08 AM »
Does anyone swap scopes from one barrel to another for varmint hunting, then deer.  I have been toying with the Idea in order to get a "nice" scope and quantify using it year round.  To explain more clearly my most expensive scope to date is under $100.  Also any suggestions are welcome, I'm thinking 4-16.

Yup...I have done this a bunch of times...I have a Leupold VX-1 4-12x40 set up in a set of Leupold QWR rings I do this with...You just need a good scope that will track true all the time and a good set of rings on the same size base...

Stop me if I am wrong but if you change scopes from one rifle to another you still would have to sight it in again. I would just like to clear this up for someone that would be a newbe or such.

sure sighting in the scope would need to be done each time.  But I have a 400yd range set up behind the house.

Yes...you need to write down how many clicks in each direction you move off the original settings and save it...then when you switch back..return to the same setting as previously on the scope. Good scopes will let you track back & forth and return to the original zero...This is also another reason to shoot the box with every scope you have to see how well they track for you..

Yup...you shoot a 3 shot group ...move the elevation up 3 or 4 inches..shoot another group...move the scope left or right 3-4 inches shoot another group..move the scope down 3 or 4 inches shoot another group  and back to where you started for a last group...your last shots shots should land in the same place as the first group if all goes well..and as long as you moving the scope the exact same amount...your groups should be evenly spaced in a box like shape...

Here's a good explanation and graphic of "shooting the box"...

Either way works..as I described you can get by with 3 less shots if the rifle is already sighted in... ;D

For this use good rings are mandatory.
I use a bunch of Warne Quick Detach, less than 1/4 MOA of difference when repositioning.
Never hesitate to dismount scope for trying, cleaning or storage. The first shot is never far, (depending on shooter concentration).
