I love my remingtons and will never get rid of the two made in the 70's.  They are shooters and seem to be smoother than the newer ones.  My slim barrel 243 will shoot between 1/2 and 3/4 moa everytime I take it out.  My old varmint-barreled 22-250 will shoot in the .3's everytime.  These are for 3 shots per group.  It took some work to get them to shoot that well though.  Triggers are adjusted, actions are bedded and barrels are floated and loads are worked up.  I'm no great shot but I do better than most, and I am pleased with the way my remingtons shoot.  But I will also admit that the savages I've had were just as easy to get great shot groups from too.  I like the smoothness and the looks of the remingtons over the savages but they all have been dependable and accurate.  Personally the only guns that I've really disliked and had problems with were a couple of H&R single shots, of course some people like them alot and I don't talk trash about their choices.  NOW BACK ON TOPIC, I'd like to have one of the 799 chambered in 7.62x39.  The 798's Ive handled I thought were a bit heavy but the fit and finish wasn't too bad.    Dave

Not belittling just stating the facts.

Facts are supported by data.  Something that you've consistently failed to provide, even when presented with data that directly contradicts your position.  You have a very warped idea of what exactly constitutes a "fact".

Swampy isn't interested in facts, just wishful thinking and spouting green ideology.  Facts have no place in his world.

Hey, I'm not the one letting folks know I own a Ruger.

It's not the guns.

Here’s a proposition for you Swampy –

If it’s not the gun then you shouldn’t have any trouble beating my Rugers with it.

Come to Colorado and we’ll head to my range with my Ruger MKII .30-06 and you with my Remington M700 .30-06.  Both of us can use the ammo of their choice.  (I assume you’ll want to use Remington since you’ve previously stated how well that shoots in Remington rifles.)

You can have all the time and shots you want to zero the rifle.  Then we’ll each shoot a 5 shot group at 100 yards.  The person that shoots the smallest group wins and is paid $500 by the loser.

Name the date.

My Ruger shoots factory ammo at less than MOA right out of the box.  It has a boat paddle stock, which I like, as well as stainless.  It is weatherproof, lightweight, 3 position safety, claw extractor, integral scope mounts.  Just to try it out, I have removed the scope, and put it back on and it still shot the same, using a quarter to turn the main lockdown screws.  Remington is good, but not "the best".

Just purchased two more "boat paddle" stocks.  One went on my stainless MKII .30-06 and the take-off laminate stock will go on a custom I'm building on a MKII long action/mag face action.

Not sure what I'll do with the other, may keep it as a swap-out for the custom for bad weather hunting.

Those things are virtually indestructible and lightweight and the two rifles I have  stocked with tehm shoot very nicely.  Not very pretty, but I don't care - their beauty is in their function.

Remington has had quality problems especially back in the 1990's.  Their shotgun choke tubes were subbed out to China for a few years.  They didn't shoot true.  So were their shotgun trigger assemblies.  They had a lot of failures.  They once dominated the market on the 1100 and 11-87 shotguns.  Now they have lost out to Beretta, Browning, Benelli, Winchester.  Newer designs have fewer moving parts, etc.  I have a Benelli Super Black Eagle, Remington 1100, had a Browning Gold, and I have a Beretta 391.  Sold the Browning Gold.  Didn't fit right, couldn't shoot it straight.  I use the Benelli SBE because it can shoot 2-3/4 light loads all the way to 3-1/2" mags without doing anything.  It is a recoil operated gun so not much to clean.  Remingtons and Berettas get awful dirty after a day of sporting clays.  Remingtons have a little O ring that can break and make a single shot out of it.  Have to carry a spare.   I can take down the Benelli all the way to the firing pin without tools.  Awesome gun.  I've had 4 Remington rifles.  Two 700 BDL's and two 742's.  742's were not the best autos.  Brownings are, or get a Garand.   My old 1970's 700 was fine.  My newer one, the bolt sometimes comes completly out while cycling a shell.

Pull off the stock and clean and oil the bolt release good.  If it don't help the spring for the bolt release is weak and may need replaced.  Dave

You know where I live, come on down.

What's halfway between Colorado and Where Swampman Lives (FLA is it?)
I would think somewhere around Little Rock AR. Perhaps someone on GB
could host the competition between the 2 of ya.

As far as 1/2 MOA out of the factory Rem .. I am actually quite close (not quite there but sub MOA) with my little 25th anniversary mod seven,  X-Mark Pro Trigger, 22 inch tube , 9 1/4 rate of twist, shooting 7mm-08 140gr off the shelf ammo.

Now the 120gr shoot a tad bit high left (probably the shooter ie:me) and the spread is a little broader (not much) than the 140gr's.

and Any 150gr off the shelf ammo is just down right Awful (don't group worth a hoot no matter what ammo I try)
Federal Fusion actually provides me the best groups but none of it is anything to write home about.
I also noticed I had varying success with the 150's (but never consistent) with different fluctuation in outside temps.

But that little mod seven loves 140Gr  off the shelf ammo and bullet type doesn't seem to affect the spread much either.  It loved 'em since day one right outta the factory box. Just eats 'em up and spits 'em out down range accurately and consistently in itty bitty groups if I do my part . I should also state I don't really put much emphasis on  MOA 3 shot groups as this is a hunting rifle not a target rifle. but it's nice to know with the 140gr I can achieve it.

Side note , I have had a few family and friends shoot the 140Gr out of my mod seven and no matter the shooter  -  shot groups are pretty much always the same if they do their part.

I would still like to try Hornady 139gr  SST or 139gr GMX  bullets. maybe on my next payday.

Name calling is not necessary.

And a violation of forum rules.  I find that when folks have lost the debate the resort to name calling and/or some method of slander to reduce the validity of the messenger that delivered the facts.  I've watched these methods in use all my life.

If the guns weren't as they left the factory nothing would be proven.  Folks usually start boogering things up before they even shoot the gun to see how it shoots.  Bedding and free floating are unnecessary & trigger work usually results in an unsafe condition and then they blame Remington when they make a hole in something they didn;t intend to.

The Remington 700 is the most accurate production rifle in the world right out of the box.

I'm bored now.  Feel free to prattle on...

i have a 798 in 243 and it is a shooter. the fit and finish is great but it does not cycle as smooth as a remington 700. i am a fan of the mauser action as well as the 700. i also like the model 7 and the 600's. the 788's are good rifles as well. they are all capable of being great shooters.

The 788's are EXCELLENT rifles.  If I ever do lay down the cash for a Remington rifle, it's far more likely that I'll be buying a 788 than a 700.

The last two times I've been to the range I shot my 6.5-06AI Interarms Mark X (Zastava) exactly once each time to check the zero.  Both were 2.6: high at 100 and dead center on the vertical.  If it had been one target the two-shot "group" size would have been about half-caliber.

It's really tough to get a Mauser to shoot MOA.  That big honkin' battlefield extractor bears against the head of the cartridge squewing it in the chamber.  The bullet has to start down the barrel crooked.  The Remington 700 being perfectly designed doesn't have all these issues.  Just open the factory box and instant MOA or better with factory ammo.  Of course some folks just can't shoot and they blame it on the rifle.

Hhhhmmmm---my Ruger Hawkeye with its big ol claw will outshoot any Remington I ever owned--the Remingtons are all gone cause they're garbage rifles and I would steer any perspective buyer away from them.

Of course if they have already bought one I'll bite my tongue--cause Momma said if you don't have anything nice to say--don't say anything at all.

For that matter--my Brownings--Tikka's --Sako's and even my new cheap TC Venture will outshoot any Remington I've ever owned---obviously its not the shooter---but the rifle.

The Ruger is even worse.  The only inaccurate rifles I've ever owned were Rugers.  I sold them pretty quickly.  The foreign made garbage .....I don't know what to say.

I've had an old Ruger with the tang safety push feed.  I have a new Ruger with the claw extractor.  I've had 3 Remington 700's.  I kept the new Ruger and two custom Mausers.  I've had Remintons fail.  One the bolt came out every time I cycled it.  What's with that?  Push feeds are ok for non-dangerous game.  Mausers are the rifle of choice in Africa.   Rugers are the second choice.  Read some in the African section.  Back to Remingtons.  I get and have made better groups with the Ruger integral scope  mounts.  My Ruger keeps it's zero from year to year.  With Remingtons, never was able to do that.  I do not like the Browing A-bolt.  Haven't tried any others, only Rugers and Remingtons and Mausers.  I've stuck with Rugers and Mausers.
