It's really tough to get a Mauser to shoot MOA.  That big honkin' battlefield extractor bears against the head of the cartridge squewing it in the chamber.  The bullet has to start down the barrel crooked.

So far my Interarms Mauser has been accurate with everything I’ve tried in it.  Even my fireform loads are accurate enough that I use them to plink clay pigeons off the 600-yard berm at the range.

The problem you are talking about is more theoretical than actual and probably only exhibits itself to a noticeable degree in Mausers with sloppy chambers.  A Remington M700 with a sloppy chamber isn’t going to shoot well either.

Quote
The Remington 700 being perfectly designed doesn't have all these issues.  Just open the factory box and instant MOA or better with factory ammo.  Of course some folks just can't shoot and they blame it on the rifle.

Neither of the two brand new Remington M700’s (both .30-06) I’ve shot in the last couple years were MOA with factory ammo – didn’t matter if it was Remington, Federal, Winchester or Hornady, and I tried them all.  Mine is not MOA with my handloads, either, although both my Ruger M77 and MKII .30-06 rifles are well under MOA.

As to the shooter, all I’ll say is I’ve shot .5” groups at 200 yards (1/4 MOA) with one of my Rugers.  When my Rugers and Interarms consistently shoot 3-shot, cold bore groups well under MOA and my Remington M700 is lucky to shoot MOA at best and 1-1/4MOA more typically, it isn’t the shooter.

Rugers and Mausers are ok for big game at close rage and they are popular for that.  All you have to be able to do is hit an 8" pie plate.

The Remington 700 has no rival and that's why it's so popular (universally) for tactical use where accuracy is critical.

These are the groupings I shot with my rifle. I was not shooting
for groupings, but to get use to the rifle and to get the scope
sighted in. I used the cheapest ammo I could get. That is why I only
shot 2 shot groups, to keep the barrel from heating up. I am sure I should
be able to get the same result with 3 shots. I will try this once I get the rifle back from
the gunsmith. I couldn't move the scope back far enough so he will have to
make me a new base. These were at 100 meters (110 yards). Those little blocks
are just under an inch each, so that will give you an idea of the group size.
Oh yes, the rifle is a stock standard 300 Winmag Zastava with one of those big battlefield
extractors.

I really wish my Remington M700 could shoot as well as my Rugers or my Interarms Mark X.  Here’s a few samples of the Rugers:

This one Is self-explanatory.  Ruger M77 .257 Roberts.

Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag in 40-60 mph crosswinds:

Ruger MKII .300 Win Mag w/ “Boat paddle” stock.  First shot was from cleaned and oiled bore:

Ruger M77 .30-06, two-shot scope check.

No target pics for my  new-to-me Ruger MKII .30-06, but it was shooting dime-sized groups when I checked it out for antelope hunting.  (And its going again in about 20 minutes.)

Also no pic for my Ruger MKII .22-250 and the half-in groups it shoots at 200 yards, but only because I don’t have quick access to the photos.  Can post them later.

Anyone that thinks Ruger rifles are only OK for “big game at close rage” [sic] is ignorant.  Anyone that continually spouts such nonsense in the face of the vast evidence to the contrary (not just what I’ve provided) is a fool.  Not speaking of anyone in particular, necessarily, but if the shoe fits....

I just sold a Remington 300wm at a gun show that was all over the paper.  Made in 1976.  Why?  Remington isn't perfect.  No gun company is.  My Ruger .308 shoots dime sized groups at 100 yards out of the box.  Hornady light magnums give me better groups than Coreloks.  To me they have average mid-range quality and priced weapons.  For push feeds Weatherby's are slicker and more polished.  No comparison for Mauser actioned guns.  It costs more to make a Mauser action than push feed.

A common saying........."If Ruger ever made an accurate gun, it must still be at the factory"

No bullet beats the Core-Lokt on deer size game......none.....period.

 :o WOW!  WHAT A GROUP!
I have a M77MkII in the Bob that I can't get to shoot under an inch and a half; and then only with one load using 115 gr. Noslers.   :(  I've killed a lot of deer (and a coyote) with it, but I sure wish it would, and I know it can, shoot better.  When I get time I'm gonna play with it some more, bed the stock maybe...  :-\

You can rest assured if you can't get good groups out of a Ruger it isn't the rifle or ammo's fault. ;D

If I were to buy a Ruger (which I wouldn't) I'd wouldn't even bother to shoot it until I spent a week fixing it.  At that point I consider myself really lucky if it shot less than 2 MOA with the right handloads.

That would make it as accurate as any I've ever owned, tested, or repaired.

Well while I have always found Remington 700 rifles accurate I have also had a few Rugers that were accurate as well. I think most of the problem with the hit and miss accuracy problems were when they were using barrels made by other folks and when they started making their own barrels most of that problem went away. Heck I have had a couple of # 1 rifles that shot under an inch with factory loads. Also had a 77 25-06 with tang safety that would shoot 3 shots into less than 3/4 inch at a hundred yards Winchester 120 grain loads. Now While I do believe on average the Remington rifles are more accurate out of the box there are still a LOT of Rugers that will shoot under 2 inches with factory loads without any tinkering .
I have never fired a 798 but have looked over a couple and they are ok but not anywhere close to an Interarms Mark X Mauser in fit nor finish . I suspect that with some smoothing of the action that they would be just fine though .
Let me make myself perfectly clear I love my Remingtons and prefer them but to say that all Rugers are terrible shooters is simply not true.

Swampman, you really do have a problem with reality don't you!!  I own both 700's and Ruger 77's and I find both to equally accurate with the handloads they like.  In fact I have shot my best five shot groups under 1/2" out of the Rugers.  I know you won't believe it but I speak about honest results not fanasties.

Sounds to me like your "fixing" is the problem.

My brother and hunting buddy also shoot Rugers and I have yet to see one that is as bad as my .30-06 M700.

4 MOA seems to be about average for an out of the box Ruger.....Not so good!

Ahhh I see swampy is off the meds again.. I think i have figured out why he disappears now and then  ;)

The nursing staff take his computer access away for being naughty and not taking the meds  ::).

No one with that twisted a mind is surely out and about  :o he must be in some secure mental insitution. If not then that's where he deserves to be. The thought of someone so out of whack and hold guns is frankly frightening  :o

Having read this thread I can honestly say it's got to be the highlight is dumb barnd stupidity from swampy and surpasses all his others that I have ever read. let's hope they find a treatment that can bring some sort of reality into his brain  ;).

Clay pigeons at 600 yards are a particular problem.  Not so much at 400 or even 500 with the Rugers, but have yet to hit one at any range past 100 with my Rem M700 .30-06.  My older (1975) Rem M700 .308 Win does nicely at all aforementioned ranges, keeping up with the Rugers.

I must be lucky. My MK 2 77 stainless .270 shoots dime sized groups at 100 yards with my had loads. The only thing added was a Timmney trigger., and I torque all the stock screws to spec.

Oh I should point out that the only Ruger I even owned was a rather nice No1B in .300 Win mag. It shot the Lapua 200 mega factory ammo into about 12- 1 1/2" and hand loads varied from 3/4" to 3" depending upon bullet and recipe. I have never owned a Remington Centre fire rifle.

Now a good friend brought a 700VSS in .223 which was the best thing since sliced bread according to him. Then later he acquied a beautiful Musgrave 98 in .308 and with BLC-2 and a 150grn bullet it would wipe the floor with the VSS. I used to rib him unmercifully about that. Then he brought a new S/S synthetic stocked Model 70 Varmint in .308 and that too was more accurate that the 700VSS. The Winchetsr was a much nicer rifle to shoot as far as I was concerned and although I shot the 700VSS I never liked it and in fact it felt ruddy awful to me.. I tried to buy the Musgrave off him several times and when he sold it due to ill health someone offered double what I could afford at the time  :'(.

Now to out a time-scale on this the VSS was a new model then and the PSS had just been released the Winchester came a long about 4 years later so this was  not the last or current mode 70 but one from about 20 years ago now. It shot superbly and even liked the 150 grain Fed American Eagle ammo. however I could not get past the horrid black plastic stock.

OH yes he brought his girlfriend a Ruger No1B in .243 win and with the Speer 85 grain bullet it would also wipe the floor with the 700VSS but use a 100 grain bullet and that Ruger shot patterns  ??? not an unknown problem with the .243 though. He never did buy a second Remington though............................................... I wonder why?

He brought a Sako instead. Sadly that's gone too as he had to sell them all as I said due to ill health it's too much for him now to even walk round the clay ground  :(.

If you want a good rifle buy a Remington 700, if you don't mind oats that have already been through the horse then there are plenty of others to select from.
