I need help getting a value of a 1903 springfield
« on: April 09, 2007, 03:12:14 PM »
I have a rifle that I'm going to be selling for a family member. It's a 1903 Springfield mark 1 with a serial number that my research shows is from 1919. It has a machined floor plate and not a stamped one. It apparently has been re-barreled. The barrel is a 2 groove barrel with no sights, at the end of the barrel it's marked RA 6-44 with the flaming bomb. The lower portion of the stock I believe is original to the 1919 action because in front of the trigger guard it has like 7 different car-touches, with a P behind it, and a couple more at the wrist. The barrel is darn near perfect and the parkerizing has a patina on the whole rifle. Now with the problems, the biggest is the rear site was removed and the receiver was tapped on the bolt side with two holes for a williams peep site. The stock I believe someone put a poly finish on, and the upper hanguard is missing the rear metal trim piece. Overall the gun is very nice with an unbelievable barrel but with the tapped receiver I'm just not sure what it's worth. Any ideas?

To a collector it is not worth very much.To someone who wants to make a nice deer rifle with a scope it is worth in the neighborhood of $150.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Although I have one, I really don't know much about the value.  I would say however that for $150.00 it would make someone a VERY FINE base upon which to build a nice using rifle.  The action is tough and simple.  The safety system I think is the absolute best!  Two groove rifles can be made to shoot VERY well.  If you were in my family, I would be the one paying $150.00 to keep it around.  Everybody goes goo goo gaa gaa over pre 64 Winchesters.  In my opinion the 1903 is a better using rifle.  Good luck selling the rifle.  Don't under value this fine base for a great hunting rifle!

I have a Rem .03 in pristine shape with barrel date of '42.  I think it is worth about $650-700.  I think yours is worth much more that $150, although the screw holes do detract alot from price.   go to www.oldguns.net
If you still want to sell it give me a price.
thanks

I believe I just saw '03 stocks for sale at JG  sales as well as a couple of other companies in an ad in shotgun news, and Numerich (spelling) usually has them

A gun is worth what someone will pay for it. How hard you look for a suitable "someone" is the question.

I assume you have done your homework. The first '03s actions were not of the best treated steel and tended to crack and become unsafe... Supposedly Uncle Sam managed to "recall" all these actions and swap them for a later version "double heat treated..." If you have an action that was missed, unlikely, it could be very valuable. 1919 suggests a double heat treated... Safe. The 2 groove and date in '44 suggests that the gun was redone for the government during WW II as a trainer, drill rifle, guard rifle... etc. Combat soldiers got Garands by then, hopefully.  Many of the 2 grooves shoot remarkedly well. If the wood is original, the plastic finish can be taken off. I would seek the advice of someone who works with wood. Brownells.com for instance. There is probably a solvent that will strip it without the work of sanding it off. And an oil finish or none at all would be o.k. to a collector. As said, many sources have the metal parts. The end for the foreend top and a sight, maybe. I would look into the holes carefully, research type "look into." Some guns were drilled for various "sniper" sights. More likely for a civilian use, but if it is sniper... more value to a collector. And if you can pick up the sight and sell the gun with it on, more value...

As I said, how much work do you want to do and how hard do you want to search for a qualified buyer. Shotgunnews.com beats the local paper for anything but tomato stakes every time. It has been long enough that '03s are getting a little scarce... I would work a little to find a crazy collector. luck.

03 UNDER 500,000 IS NOT WISE TO SHOOT.THE YR44 BARREL MAKES IT NOT A COLLECTOR GUN. I have a 1913 barreled 03/ I shoot lead hand loads no full power.i would expect the gun to be worth $400 or more.It is a springfield 03 after all.you did say it was springfield not remington.take it to gun show and price it there. ::) :o

I took it to a show, had several dealers drool over it and sold it for $360, 15 minutes after I got there. I probably could have held out for $400 but I didn't want to mess around any more.
