back up for hogs

 I'm thinking about taking my m1 carbine hog hunting and was wondering which hand gun for a back up the choices I have are a 1911 45 a s&w 44 spl or a beretta 40 caliber and what load to use

first i think your slightly out of the league of that carbine pig hunting. No doubt with a perfect shot it would kill one but why use a gun that is asking for trouble. Out of all your guns you have one that is proper for the job. Your 44 special loaded with 250 hardcast at about 1000 fps will do well.

My Speer reloading manual reveals that  the M1 Carbine will launch a 110 gr. bullet with a MV of 1980 fps.  The good old "thuddy-thuddy" sends that same 110 gr. bullet off at 2700 fps and if you want to jump to a 150 grs. it leaves the muzzle at just over 2200 fps.  The Speer tome lables the M1 round "anemic" ("underpowered for deer") and also notes the M1 Carbine was never known for its accuracy.  In other words, its a dog.

CorBon loads a 100 grain DPX bullet in the 30 Carbine. It would be worth taking a look at.

Sorry, but the 30 carbine isn't a good choice for hogs.  We used to use them on Javelina in South America and simply wasted shots.  Unless you connect with the noggin, and dead on at that, you don't get the results you expect - they disappear into the brush and you never see them.  I wouldn't bother spending the $ on the cor-bon ammo, not for 30 carbine and hogs.

With the calibers listed the 44 with a heavy load is about the best bet but for the hogs I have hunted I would prefer a magnum in 44 with a heavy slug.  Mikey.

Well, I would like to give you hope on you M1 carbine but? We have lots of hogs here where I live, and I sometimes use an AR to kill them. They are not that hard to kill, despite the myth that floats around. However, the M1 Carbine in reality is a pretty sad performer, and always has been. Apparently you know that already, as you are asking what a good back up gun would be. Sorry.

Yep!   The best defense is a good offense & a short for caliber 30 Carbine IS NOT a good offense. Why not just use the right gun & then carry a side arm just in case you Want to shoot something with it. Rehearse it in your mind, how long would it take to sit the inadequate rifle down, pull your revolver out & get off a well placed shot on Mr. P'ed off Razorback (I'm an Arkie) that was shot at close range to begin with? Have you seen them run? We are not talking about police work, a back-up for a Meth head.

Hmmm-I have not had the good pleasure of hunting hogs yet but I think I would use ol' Bad News" as my backup. Blackhawk 45lc 335 grain cast at 1200fps ;D For my main gun I would use a Marlin Lever Action 475 Linebaugh 1894 Ben Forkin conversion built in Montana ;)  I just seen a fellows leg that had a run in with a nasty hog.  If you want to use the carbine then use it, if you can shoot it accurately! Since the 30 carbine is really a glorified 22mag without the accuracy, you need to modify the bullets some what. I take the FMJ ammo and ground the tip down to expose the lead. It makes a nice meplate and allows the 110gr to penetrate nicely. Hogs aren't that hard to kill and the 30 cabine has plenty of wallop to 100yds. Both the 1911 45 and the 44spl will work great for back up. The best place to be when hunting hogs is up close and personal anyway, just relax, make a good shot and take your hog home.

"A glorified 22 mag without the accuracy" seems to be an ill-advised Hog gun. This is a short for caliber bullet & if you grind down the
tip to get a better meplat, you would get a better expander at the expense of even less penetration.

Under feed lot conditions a Hog is indeed VERY easy to kill. I have seen some killed with a 22 at our place as a kid, even a 22 short at times, I think. That has nothing to do with a big Hog working his way through a thicket, I have taken several Hogs in the woods. So, I know the difference. Yea, under many circumstances (but not all & no, I don't think it is a Hog gun either), I could just take my AR & shoot them between the eye & ear. So accuracy will help, but to use a gun that is not accurate & has no power either is better left to point blank shooting at the feed lot.
So, for an all around Hog hunting conditions, why not just use a suitable Rifle or Handgun.

I would take lloyd's idea, forget about the m1, and use the .44 for the hunting, and the backup.

Hunt with the 44 and back it up with the 45 ,,,my last hog took 4 blade muzzy in the head, another in the lungs, 12 gauge slug in the lungs and finally another slug in the kidneys!! 180# boar, so i wouldn't be messing with no 30 carbine!!!  Sometimes they just don't want to go down!!!

  After 50+ years of hunting.(I'm 62) I carried a back up for a few years. I NEVER used it and you most likely wont either. When I realized that I was ALWAYS using my primary arm for any 2nd shot that might or not be needed I left that 4 pound gun and ammo in the camp. Yes ,I did hunt with hand guns and rifles! Just not both weapons at the same time. When bow hunting it is NOT legal to carry a fire arm here. I guess that's what convinced me to leave the back up off!

Yep, but the primary gun should be the right gun & that is the issue here.
