more bears
« on: April 11, 2007, 05:24:28 AM »
So I got a call yesterday, and they have opened up a big area to predator control.  My property just happens to be right in the middle of it, so I'm thinking around June I'm gonna be taking a trip up there to look around for some blackies.

This is what the call sounded like:

"So they opened up a huge area around the anchorage bowl this year for predator control, so instead of getting your black bear this year, you can go and get thirty as long as you turn in the skull" hahaha

I'm not gonna shoot thirty bears, but I thought it was funny the way he put it.

Another thing, can anyone recommend a small cheap chainsaw or other saw that would be good for cutting up meat?  When I mean cheap and small, I'm thinking something that most likely comes from walmart, and would be scared of a tree, but for a couple of moose or bears a year, it could handle with a swift kick in the butt.

Never used a gas powered chain saw for that.  We got a new Craftsman 10" electric chainsaw and only put wesson oil in it for bar oil.  I have a small electric generator mounted on the track rig.

So I just got the actual information.  Opens up July 1st in unit 16, which is just to the north-north west of anchorage (just west of talkeetna in the trapper creek/petersville road area)  There are some Denali park restricted areas, but not that much at all.

A predator control permit is required, and one is allowed to use any means legal (already in use in other areas of alaska) such as baiting, calling, etc. to take animals.  Out of staters are allowed to take the old limit of three bears per year.

This hunt is for black bears, and there is already an unrestricted wolf hunt in the same area.

Untanned hides of the animals may be sold, the hide and skull needs to be sealed like any other bear hunt.

The hide must be removed from the animal including skull.  Sealing includes providing the hide and skull to Fish and Game for measurement and sex identification - plus providing some other information to the biologists. The skull is measured and a small tooth removed for age estimation. The "seals" are locking plastic tags, one for the hide and one for the skull.

Forget the chain saw for bears, they aren't that big.  Plus you sill ruin the hide.  It's not too hard to skin one, just time consuming.  To sell the hide you need to take your time and do it right.  Taxidermy is the most profittable sale of hides, and skinning that way will get the most money for the hide.  Then the hide must be fleshed, and prepaired for tanning.  Go see your local Taxidermist, or fur buyer for directions on fur handling.  As for the meat, have it cured just like you would a hog, and you can't tell the diferance.  Or just treat it like anyother meat and put it in the freezer.  Just make sure you cook it well, just like pork.

I wouldnt put a saw to an animal that wasnt skinned.  I was talking about if I did happen to have more than on bear at a time, so that in the field, I could quickly quarter and rib them
