Pistol rest?
« on: April 12, 2007, 04:13:29 PM »
What do you use for a pistol rest when shooting a scoped pistol for accuracy?I've been using sand bags but thought about getting some kind of rest just for a handgun.MTM makes a plastic one for about $20.(simple) and Outer Ridge makes a metal one for about $40. Or is there a better one for the $ out there? Any input appreciated!  Thanks!

I like this one. It is a combination long gun and pistol rest. For an addition amount you can also get a vise attachment for it.

Skunk - a couple of years ago a friend gave me a Winchester rest that I use for both rifle and pistol.  It is adjustable a pretty solid.  I also use a bag of shot with the rest for my wrist.

Whatever you decide on should allow both the pistol and your hand/wrist to rest on so there isn't any movement when you drop the hammer.  You may also wish to use some padding for your shooting elbow, as mine gets dinged up if I don't use one.  Something like an old lawn chair seat pad or a hot seat will work for that but don't forget to take it with you when you leave - I have half a dozen of those things I have found over the years that were left on the shooting benches.

If you haul a shooting bag to the range, you can also use that for a rest - I would use something to protect it from the muzzle blast though.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I use a Sinclair All-Purpose Shooters Rest with sand filled shooting bags. (This rest alone weighs almost 20 pounds.) It is adjustable, very steady & great for getting the best groups from my pistols & rifles.

I reverse my adjustable Caldwell Rock rifle rest ($65 from Bass Pro Shop) and use with a (3"X 4"X 6") block of hardwood covered with indoor-outdoor carpet. The pistol grip fits on the 3" or 4" block sides and adjusting the rest height fits all my pistols. Works great and one rest does all.
