Remington 7600 in 280rem (SCORE)
« on: April 13, 2007, 04:49:14 PM »
I just picked up another pump action rifle. (I'm an addict) This makes number 5 (1-760/ 4-7600 w/ 1 carbine). I just couldn't resist. It's in almost perfect condition with scope mounts, sling swivels and 2 boxes of ammo for $350.00. I'm a big fan of the carbine model and do most of my hunting in thick brush PA, VA and NC. I plan on using this primarily for deer and possibly black bear. Most shots are under 100 yards. I'm considering having the barrel cut to 18" and re-crowned. I read several other hunters have done this with great results. I'm kinda on the fence with this one and was looking for any opinions. The cost is $55 by the local gunsmith, who does very good work. Thanks

I would leave it just the way that it is.

You do not gain anything by cutting a couple of inches off the end of the barrel.

You also run the risk of ruining the accuracy of the rifle.

If it is as sweet a gem as you say that it is, why do you want to take a chance on ruining it?

How tall are you?  Do you have a problem with a long barrel gun?

I saw several Browning Semi Auto Rifles on the rack the last time I was in a large gun shop and nobody wanted them because somebody cut the barrels down and ruined the gun.

It wasn't that they were done shoddy, it was that it came with a long barrel and people wanted a long barrel and when the previous owner had them shortened - they didn't work out like he thought that they would,  and they dumpped them for what ever they could get for them.

I started squirrel hunting with a 28" barreled 870 shotgun.  Normally hunting here is in brush and I never thought a short barrel was a big deal after using a 28" barrel. If I did have a barrel cut it wouldn't be less than 20" for noise abatement.

No problem with accuracy after cutting the barrel as long as you have it re-crowned.

I've owned both carbines and full length Remington pumps, I find that the carbines are just as accurate if not more so and handle so MUCH better as to not be believed.  Have it cut down with a good recessed crown and you may find your rifle to be more accurate for having done so

I had one of my 7600 30-06 cut down to 19 inches. Great decision. Use is in the Maine woods. Topped off with a Redfield 1 3/4 by 5 it can't be beat in my opinion.
