Missionary gun
« on: April 14, 2007, 06:19:26 AM »
I know of a new shipment of Swedish firearms has arrived in Canada, and will be posted in a week or so.

I am in the market for a Husqvarna cape gun.  In checking some background I heard that these arms were often referred to as "missionary guns" in Scandinavia.

Anyone else heard this one?

They won't be posted for a week or so.  Two guys have to unload, catalogue, photo, and post the contents of a container!

The place to go in the USA is Simpsons in Galesburg, wherever that is?  No combo's  at present, but lots of Swedish rollers

I guess I jumped the gun, so to speak.  Tradeex's container with 1.000 firearms from Sweden just left Europe.  Give it a month or more for them to arrive and get processed for sale.

I just spoke to Anthony at Trade Ex Canada.  Their shipment from Sweden had to be shipped via a third country.  The Agents were caught without a transit permit!!  This will take some time, but I hope the anticipation will make realization the sweeter.

Where does the name come from?  Were they carried by missionaries or made to shoot missionaries?  I’m sorry I just couldn’t help myself.  I hate to see a straight line just lying there and not being used.  All kidding aside why were they called missionary guns?

"J";   Good point, I never did cotton to missionaries either!  Even when I was a sunday school teacher.  I'll look up and post the link to the source for you.

"J";  here is the link to a Swedish shooting forum.  The reference is in "Rotta"s second post on 12/22/2006 @ 1:49:59

THERE HEERE!

Trade Ex Canada have finally received their container of firearms from Sweden.  They spent almost 11 months in German port authority red-tape.  After Canadian red-tape, I will have my Husqvarna underlever cape gun! Estimated time of availability;  About two more weeks.

Dougk;

You will have to check with Simpson.  I understand that Trade Ex and Simpson's are both active at the Swedish gun auctions.

Just made my retirement move, and finally unpacked my bundle from Tradeexcanada.  There was a top-break model 48 in 9.3 x 57R  (.360 2 1/4") and 16 ga., and an underlever in 12.7 x44R & 16.  The later was in VERY good shape and cost me a bundle.  No shots, either with camera or powder, yet, but working on it!

Buffalo arms want  3 & a half dollars PER CASE for 9.3 x 72 R cases.  Has anyone experience using .38-55 cases for the .360"?  They measure .415 at the base, and are 53mm long.  What about rim thickness?

I have a Rapine mould in .366 250gr.

Where did you move to?  Are you looking for a hunting buddy??  :D

When are we going to see the pics of these rather interesting and unique guns?

Dougk;   I now live in my real hometown, Victoria BC Canada.  I have deer, squirrels and ferral Easter bunnies all around my garden, and can't put any of them in the pot!  Hunting here is mainly blacktail deer, with bear as a bonus.  As the bounty on cougar ended several years ago, they often come into the city as well.

I will get some photos going, soon.

Do you have any info on rim thickness for the 9.3mm series of rimmed cartridges like the 9.3 x 72R, as my 9.3 x 57R is merely a shortened version of that case.  .38 -55 W-W cases size well at 53mm length, but seem to sit a bit proud in the chamber.

I visited my gunshop today.  I was regaling my gunshopguy with my 9.3 X 57R adventures, and the cost of 9.3 X 72R cases.  He reached behind, and produced a box of Sellier & Belot 9.3 x 72R ammo!

The price was about the same, CAD65.00 per box, and it was his last box.  SOOO!  They walked home with me.  193 gr 2 diameter jacketted soft points.  I will have to break them down to salvage the bullets, for sale, and cut down the cases to 57mm.  The powder goes into the garden.

The rim thickness?    .050 inch  My W-W .38-55 cases were .058  (Nominally .060, is my guess.)

Shot them!   9.3 X 57R, only one shot as I only altered only one round from 9.3 X 72R.  2 inches high at 25 yards.  Looks promising.

The 12.7 X 44R made noise 4 times with cases made from .348 Win.  Basically to form the cases, but they would have made meat.  I will have to work up a load.

My Chapparal NWMP Carbine seems to be doing alright.  I now have a handful of .348 cases altered to .45-75.  Next time will be for fun!
