Got a turkey this morning.
« on: April 14, 2007, 10:51:14 AM »
My 10 gauge and I got a big gobbler late this morning.  Spring turkey opened this morning here in Kentucky.  The 10 gauge really puts them out of business.  I would love to post a picture, but I can't get it to work.

Congrats on the bird.

Less than two weeks to go now for ours in Ohio, I can't wait.

Congrats

And I thought I was the only one foolish enough to get out for the Ky opener.  Nasty weather.  Lots of guys driving the backroads  but no one else hunting that I saw.  Oh well, I had a blast even if ol tom did make me look like a fool and leave me setting in the rain.

Quick, you have an email on the way.

Darat100, I felt foolish too, but my poncho works pretty good and the rain eased off by late morning.  I am lucky, I have a bit of a hot spot where I hunt so at least seeing birds is not too difficult.  Getting one close enough to shoot is another matter.  Several of the birds I saw that morning did not respond at all to my calls.  I guess I was not very convincing.  The tom in the picture can down the hill behind me strutting for all he was worth though, so apparently I had him convinced.

Good luck with your hunting, I hope to bag my second next weekend, the weather should be better too.

It is in my sent file and was not returned so hopefully it will get to you.  Our server has been having problems this morning so that is possibly the problem.  Sometimes e-mail is no faster than traditional snail-mail.

Darat don't feel bad about the toms making you look like a fool...that happens regularly when I go turkey hunting.  Yesterday opening day I had 5 jakes right in front of me putting on quite a show and gobbling their heads off. When I tried to ease the barrel up they saw me and it was all over.  At least they came in great to my calls, and maybe I will get one another day.

Only saw jakes on that property.  The owners 11 yr. old took the 22 # boss gobbler last Sat. the youth turkey hunt day. I am glad he got him though.

I appreciate everyone's comments.  I have been two more times since and have not gotten another one.  I have seen plenty of hens though so there should be plenty of birds in the coming years.  I was talking to two gobblers this weekend, but then I heard a big boom.  The neighbor got him first.  Oh well, fair enough.
