Marlin 1895SS
« on: April 14, 2007, 09:50:37 PM »
At a gun show I acquired a Marlin Model 1895SS in blue not stainless. The rifle is in as new shape. It does not appear to have micro groove rifling.
I'm not particularly fond of the stock rear sight. Is there a better one available?
Is there a reference or sticky somewhere that might allow me to determine year of manufacture by the serial number?
I already have two NEF 45/70's and this is my first Marlin in this caliber.

We don't have a sticky for dating Marlins yet.  If someone knows where one is I will add it to the stickies list.

Keith -

This thread and link are on page 4 of this forum (Marlin Lever Action Centerfire Rifles).  I ran across it the other day but haven't tried it.  You may want to give the link a try to see how useful it might be to us.

Thanks,Ed.I tried it and the record only goes up to the year 1990.That,however,is good info to have.

The Lyman No. 16 folding rear leaf sight works on the Marlin 1895.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

I went to the gunsmith this morning and he put a rear sight on that looks exactly like that.It was in his new parts bin but was not identified as to make. The one I got does have a windage adjustment and I am very pleased with it.The sight picture looks great. My usual trip to the range on Wednesday will be the test of it.
Thank you for the information,Esoxlucius.

I was not fond of the rear sight either---since the left side was already drilled and tapped -I mounted a Lyman 66LA click adjustable Peep --
works great with my old eyes

I went to the range and got the rear sight properly adjusted for 100 yards in about 6 shots. The rifle performs great.I was able to put the last four shots in about 2 inches at 100 yards using my handloads with 300 Grain jacketed hollow point bullets.
The rifle was comfortable and functioned perfectly.I am well satisfied with this one.
