In Canada we have an additional concern at death. You can only bequeath your firearms to someone who has a valid/current Possession and Acquisition License(PAL). If there is no one, then the guns are confiscated by the police.

Isn't that a lovely feature of our new $2 billion long gun registry?

After you are dead it won't really matter to you what happens to that cabinet full of machines, (they are just machines even though people give them names and other attributes)  if you want to do something that matters to you and makes you feel good, do it before you are dead.  Larry

Larry,

You are right I suppose it doesn't matter what happens to the guns after you are gone, except my Weatherby Euromark. It was my great uncle's gun and I actually had to buy it from my dad because he never got around to putting it in his will that I was to get a gun. So no anti gun SOB is going to get his/her grubby little hands on that firearm. I will just take that one to the grave with me if I have to.

Stimpy,

So why did Tim say that you have discovered that there is life without paint? You don't paint your stocks anymore? I've liked the pictures of your handi's that I have seen.

I kinda switched gears with the last 2 sets of stocks , both had very nice wood grain to them that would have been a shame to cover up , but rest asured i still have 2 cans of primer to use up .  ;) H&R does have some butt ugly stocks that they send out covered in that brown gunk they call a finish .

Sometimes the only way to help them is with a good old paint job .  ;D

Stimpy,

You are right they are rather ugly. That is why I want to buy one of those nice laminates from gunstocks, inc. Do you have pictures of the guns you didn't paint?

Stimpy

I like the particularly like the Golden Pecan, very nice looking.  I have to ask, is it just a sand the factory finish off, new stain and oil finish?  It has been a long time since I have done any wood finishes.

I had been toying with the idea of painting the black synthetic stocks on my .17HMR a very bright high gloss Yellow.  I just wasn't sure of what prep work is needed.

I'm married to a paralegal that works for the Army.  She made sure that all that stuff was put in writing 30 years ago when I was a lot younger.  It got reinforced when for several weeks this winter, everyone in the obituaries was younger than I.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I've decided to just live forever so the problem doesn't arise for me. Seems a simple enough solution.  :o

Stimpy,

Hey thanks for the pictures. The golden pecan is really nice. So did you make that yourself or did it come with that type of wood?

Graybeard, Eskimo, Mc

I just wanted to say good luck with that whole living forever thing. If it works you might want to think about starting a new business. You could just make an infomercial and make millions. ;D

You need to remember one thing here....If its not in writing it doesnt exist.  My dad passed away in '95' and all his guns
(20 Weatherby's just for starters ) went to one of my older brothers ( 4 boys total) to be appraised and then split up.  That was the end of it he, kept them all...I even gave him back the 9mm nickle plated Colt combat Commander I had "to be fair".  If I knew then what I know now !
The whole ordeal was the sickest most digusting things I've ever been a part of. No one would have thought it in a miilion years it could've happened in our family until it did. !  My dads only brother came in to town to help out as a "neutral mediator" so to speak. He was so sickened by it all he left after two days.

It's easy to say, I'd just go and get some of them but it doesnt always work out that way....

If you dont want them in the estate, at least have a list with the model &  serial # and who it is supposed to go to....No one wants to bellieve that there will be problems,  and the best way to prevent it is to put it in writing...There was also a leopard skin rug that is now worth about $8k that was LOANED / GIVEN  to a friend (not one of my friends) ...about 8 yers ago.

The whole ordeal was the sickest most digusting things I've ever been a part of. No one would have thought it in a miilion years it could've happened in our family until it did. !

The best thing you can do for your family is to spell out in no uncertain terms who gets what and have someone from outside the family  over see the distibution.

For those who trust their wives and kids, a simple list of what should be done with your guns is sufficient. Make sure they know where the list is. If you don't trust anyone, get a layer and draw up a will.
