I must be on the other side of the fence.  I was glad to discover it was an extractor and not an ejector.  I was going to disable the ejector for SASS Buffalo Long Distance.

Capt, the nice thing about the ejector is it CAN be converted to an extractor very easily, but to convert a factory extractor to an ejector will be more difficult than most any of us could do. :'(

One shot, one kill. No need for speed loading.

Fast follow up with a Handi? Have two of them....  ;)

Other than that I do it basically like Mac does. Have a couple rounds in your support hand. One thing I never do is rotate the gun  on purpose. I drop the butt straight down and go from there. It's harder, but it keeps the weapon pointed at the target. A good habbit to get used to if you ever want to kill dangerous animals. If you do it every time it becomes habbit and you don't have to worry about it.

A cartridge carrier on the stock will give you as fast of second shot as your going to get with your rifle. You will never be able to shoot it as fast as an ejector model but, concentrate on your first shot and speed will become unimportant. With a cartidge carrier that carrys 9 rounds you can probably fire 10 rounds faster than a blind magazine bolt or a lever action.

I'd have to see that.

After I sent my 30/06 Handi in thid winter to be repaired, it was returned with a new barrel with an extractor. I had the same concern that many of you express about being able to get the empty out for a quick follow-up shot. After shooting it a little the past few months, I'll say that I'm happy with the new one. It is more reliable than the old one and more accurate to boot, based on what I've seen so far. Tim makes a good point about anyone who hunts with a muzzleloader would require more time for a follow-up shot that one using a Handi with an extractor barrel. Most of us don't hunt dangerous game, nor do we hunt in areas with grizzlies. If we did, we probably wouldn't use a single shot anyway.Attacks by grizzlies generally occur at close quarters, so close that whether we use an extractor or ejector would be of little consequence. Knowing that a second shot is going to take us a little longer, should make us more determined to get the first shot right. Isn't that why we hunt with single shots?

For those folks having a problem getting ahold of the extracted cases, maybe modifying a finger pick, like those used by banjo & guitar players could be helpful.

I rather enjoy the extractor, and the ejector didn't really make a true extractor, it just pushed the case out with spring tension.  My understanding of the workings of the new extractors, is they are true mechanical extractors, much more positive.  I know I like the one on my 38-55.

Frankly I got sick and tired of having to carry a rod around to get the stuck case out of my sons 223.  It didn't matter if loaded or empty, they stuck.  Any YES they were clean, the chamber polished, etc.  Not to mention the danger of it or the looks you get at the rifle range.

An ejector isn't very fast when you have to push a rod down the bore to get the fired case out.

Besides, if I'm worried about follow-up shots, I take my bolt guns to the field.
