Savage M93 problem discovered!
« on: April 16, 2007, 04:56:59 AM »
In a recent thread I described how my brand-new Savage 93 in 22 mag wouldn't hit the side of a barn and I was looking for possible fixes.  Well this weekend my gunsmith very likely found the problem.  There is a noticeable ring cut across the rifling about 1/8 of an inch from the muzzle.  He told me he has seen this problem on other M 93's with the standard contour (non varmint) barrels.  I had to decide whether to send it back to Savage or just have him cut the barrel and re-crown for about $45.00.  I chose the latter as I need the rifle in early June for a Prairie Dog shoot and just don't want the hassle.  I seriously doubt I could get Savage to pay for this work, although they should.

I'll post again after I've had a chance to shoot the rifle.  Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it?  Savage ought to know about it.

the only problem with having your gunsmith cut it back if what he doesn't cure it savage will not have to help you since you modified the firearm  and did not go trough a factory authorized repair shop

That is a consideration but I thought it would be easier and cheaper to go this route than to send it to Savage and then not get the gun back in time for my Prairie Dog Shoot.   The 'smith said he had seen these rings before and they do affect accuracy.  It is a roll of the dice, but on a $185.00 gun it isn't too bad.
