500 S&W Ultra load data.
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:23:55 AM »
Has anybody got any load data for the 500 S&W Ultra Rifle they would be willing to share? I have lots of data for pistol, but was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their pet loads for the rifle. I just got mine and am excited to shoot it!! Also, can anyone give me a good source of cast bullets for the 500? Something I can load light to plink with? Any experience with the accuracy?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Welcome to GBO! Check your email, that's the only rifle data I know of. Hodgdon has data online as well as Accurate.

I plink with 10 grains of Unique under a 440 grain lead bullet. Noise and recoil level is low.

I was thinking I could shoot deer with it and recover it and shoot it again like an arrow.  Of course the max loads of H110 might leave a chunk of lead somewhere but once they are shot and I recover from the recoil....I never want to see those again..  ;D

I have only shot cast bullets and only from ranger rick ((  http://www.lsstuff.com/ranger-rick/  )). I have not found a need to look  anywhere else yet. Bullets are hard and shoot clean.

Just got back from the range with the NEF.  All loads are with the Lee 440 gr cast:

H110 - 38.0 grs - 1750 fps Magnum Primer
H4227 - 37.0 grs - 1640 fps
SR4759 - 40.0 grs (full) - 1850 fps (Hot load - very accurate, SD of only 10 fps on five shots)
IMR4198 - 47.0 grs (full) - 1780 fps
Reloder 7 - 50.0 grs (full) - 1650 fps
WC-735 (surplus powder like H322) - 60.0 grs (full) - 1860 fps Magnum Primer
BLC-(2) - 58.0 grs (full) - 1420 fps Magnum Primer - very accurate

All were accurate and worthy of more work.  I expected much higher MV's for all loads, as with H110 and H4227 (Hodgdon loads), they only matched what they listed as for a 8 5/8" barrelled revolver and the NEF has a 22" barrel.

Well, it's likely that the last 5-6 inches of barrel does not help you much with velocity.  You are using a fairly heavy bullet, so your energies should certainly be adequate - and listed loads are for fast burning pistol powders, mostly.  I am surprised to see that the BLC-2 is so slow.

Cor-bon 440gr hard cast runs ~1950fps, I wouldn't be surprised if they use Lil'gun, it works great for me.

Can be driven to any pain, er, recoil level that you can put up with.
One of these days, I'll get hold of Ranger Rick, and see about some of those 700 gr. artillery rounds.

I've had excellent results with the ranger rick 610gr @ around 1425fps with lil gun.  Pretty much all I shoot in my .500 now.

My local shop has a 500 on the rack. It's been there for about a year... nobody wants it I guess. :-\
He sells alot of 45-70's though.

When you consider factory ammo prices with the 45-70 starting at around $25 compared to 500S&W at $40 a box, it's not too surprising.

It's still surprising he ain't sold it though... it's got some real nice figure to the stocks and it opens and closes smooth as glass.
I've thought about buying it but I'd definitely have to reload for it... the factory ammo is too pricy for my budget.

After the brass cost it isnt any more expensive to shoot than any other big bore you would reload for. And, after you play with it and get bored you can sell it here.........

I have just begin working with mine, which I accidentally acquired. There is a link in FAQ's by John Taffin that has some load data, and I have found that 50/70 data will work. There is no way that I could or would afford to shoot factory loads, I immediately bought 100 brass and some Lee dies and mold, the 440 gr gc. I found that 14 gr of unique and a CCI 350 primer, magtech brass, gives me 1.6" groups at 50 yds. I do not have a chronograph but data suggests that it should be in the 1250 fps range. It is not unpleasant to shoot, but you know it goes off. I am using it here in Mo to deer hunt in the mornings. This load penetrated 5 2x4's and lodged in the 6th. That will certainly go through several deer. I may work up a "midrange" load with some XMP-5744, but I seriously doubt that I will ever shoot a full power load through it, there is just no need.I believe that over time my cost per shot will be around 10-12 cents.

I see that manatee and I think alot alike. I started casting because of the 500, I bought a LEE 440 grain mold and use wheel weights to make my bullets.
I use 34.5 (thirty four point five) grains of Accurate 5744 powder, CCI-200 primer, Starline brass and my wheel weight bullets to get 1450 FPS and +/- 2" groups @ 100 yards.

GOOD SHOOTING!
